Amr bin Shu'ayb narrates from his father, from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him), that a woman said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! This is my son; my womb was a vessel for him, my breast was a drink for him, and my lap is a refuge for him. His father has divorced me and wants to take him from me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As long as you do not marry again, you have more right to him."

Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad narrates from his father, from the jurists of Madinah whose opinion was the final word, that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) judged between Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and Asim's maternal grandmother concerning Asim bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and ruled in the grandmother's favour until Asim reached maturity; and the mother of Asim was alive at that time and was married.

Al-Qasim bin Muhammad says: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had an Ansari woman in his marriage, and Asim bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) was born to him from her. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had divorced her. One day Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) rode to Quba and saw Asim (may Allah be pleased with him) playing in the courtyard of the mosque. He took him by the arm, seated him on his mount and set off. The boy's grandmother saw this and took the child from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). The two of them came to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "He is my son." The woman said: "He is my son." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Umar! Leave the way clear for her." And Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said nothing more.
