Al-Qasim bin Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on him) says that a man of Thaqif entrusted his authority to his wife, and she said: "You are divorced." He remained silent. The second time the woman said: "You are divorced." He said: "A stone in your mouth!" The third time the woman said: "You are divorced." The man said: "A stone in your mouth!" The dispute of the two was brought to Marwan bin al-Hakam (may Allah have mercy on him). The husband said: I gave her the authority for only one (divorce), and he swore an oath to that, so Marwan (may Allah have mercy on him) returned the wife to him. Al-Qasim (may Allah have mercy on him) used to like this judgement and considered it a good thing that he had heard.

Sa'id bin Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a woman said to her husband: "If the authority that is in your hand were given to me, you would know what I am." So the man entrusted his authority to the woman. The woman said: "I have given you three divorces." When this was said to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said: May Allah make your act go wrong! For she did not divorce herself. Divorce is given to the woman, not to the man.
