Ikrimah narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a woman said to her husband: "If the authority to divorce that is in your hands were mine, then I would do something." So the husband gave this authority to the wife. She said: "You are divorced three times." Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: May Allah Almighty make her act go wrong; why did she not divorce herself?
(b) Ibrahim says that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: May Allah make her act go wrong; why did she not say, "I have divorced myself"? Ibrahim says: Her saying is the same either way: "I divorce you" and "I divorce myself".
(25) Chapter: The man who divorces his wife within himself and does not move his tongue with it, i.e. the husband divorces his wife in his heart without speaking it with his tongue.
