Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman says that Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), informed him that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to her when Allah, the Lord of Might, commanded him to give his wives the choice. He (peace and blessings be upon him) began with me and said: "I am going to mention a matter to you, but do not be hasty; rather, consult your parents," for he (peace and blessings be upon him) knew that my parents would never tell me to separate from him. Then he said: The saying of Allah, the Lord of Might, is: "O Prophet, say to your wives" [Surah al-Ahzab: 28] (the complete two verses). I said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): Is it about this that I should consult my parents? I want Allah, His Messenger and the Home of the Hereafter.
(b) Yunus narrates from al-Zuhri: in it there are some additional words: then the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said just as I had said.

Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I asked Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) about the choice, and she said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us the choice and we chose him, and that was not a divorce."

Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I do not care whether I give my wife the choice once, or a hundred times, or a thousand times, after she has chosen me. I asked Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us the choice; was that a divorce?"

Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Umar and Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them both) both used to say: When the husband gives the wife the choice and she chooses herself, it is one divorce and the man has more right to her; and if the wife chooses her husband, nothing is due from him.

Tawus narrates from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that regarding the choice he held the same view as Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).

Isa bin Asim narrates from Zadhan: We were with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and he mentioned the choice (entrusting the decision of divorce to the wife). Then he said: The Commander of the Believers asked me about the choice, and I said: If the woman chooses herself, she becomes separated by one divorce; and if she chooses her husband, it is one divorce, but the husband has more right to the woman. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It is not so; rather, if the woman chooses her husband, nothing is due from him; and if the woman chooses herself, it is one divorce and the man has more right to the woman. I had no option but to follow the Commander of the Believers, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). When the matter came to rest with me alone, and I knew that I would be questioned about (the lawfulness of) private parts, I adopted my own opinion. They said: By Allah! Had you agreed with the opinion of the Commander of the Believers, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and left your own opinion, that would have been dearer to us than a view in which you stand alone. The narrator says: He laughed, then (said that) he had sent someone to Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), who asked Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him), and he differed from both me and him. Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If the wife chooses herself, it is three divorces for her; and if the wife chooses her husband, it is one divorce for her and the man has more right to the wife.

Amir narrates from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): When a man gives his wife the choice and she chooses her husband, it is one divorce and the husband has more right to take her back. If the woman chooses herself, she becomes separated by one divorce, and that man will be one of the suitors (who may propose to her).
(b) Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) says: If the wife chooses herself, it is three divorces.
(c) Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When a man gives his wife the choice and the wife chooses her husband, nothing is due from him. If the wife chooses herself, it is one divorce and the man has the right to take her back. So the view of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) on the choice agrees with the view of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and this is what we hold, (as it agrees with) what is reported from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning the choice, and with the hadith of Rukanah from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning (the word) al-battah, that when he intends one (divorce) "it will be a revocable divorce."

Abu Hassan (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If the woman chooses herself, it is one separating (irrevocable) divorce; and if she chooses her husband, it is one divorce and the husband has more right to the woman. This is also the view of Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him).

Abu Ishaq says: Abu al-Safar and I went to Abu Ja'far, and I asked about a man who gave his wife the choice and the wife chose herself. He said: It is one divorce, and her husband has more right to take her back. We said: And if the woman chooses her husband? He said: Then nothing at all is due from him. We said: People narrate from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that if the woman chooses her husband, it is one divorce and the husband has more right to take her back; and if the woman chooses herself, it is one separating (irrevocable) divorce and the woman has more control over herself. He said: That is something they found in written pages. As for Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), what is authentic from him we have already mentioned.

Masruq narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): When a man says to his wife: "Take charge of your own affair," or "Your affair is yours," or gives her away to her family, it is one irrevocable divorce (talaq ba'inah).
This is how it appears from Abdullah in this narration; what is correct is that it is the saying of Masruq.

Yahya bin Wathhab (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him): When a man says to his wife: "Your affair is yours" and "Choose," or gives her away to her family, it is one separating (irrevocable) divorce.

Sharik narrates from Abu Husayn that Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said regarding giving (the wife) away: "If they accept her, it is one divorce and the man has more right to the woman."
Sufyan said that this is from Masruq (he did not say "from Abdullah"); what is authentic from Abdullah is what was mentioned earlier, and Allah knows best.

Abd al-Rahman bin al-Qasim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father that Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) proposed Quraybah bint Abi Umayyah in marriage for Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both), and they married her to him. Then they reproached Abd al-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him), saying: We only arranged the marriage at the word of Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). So Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) sent a message to Abd al-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) and mentioned this, and Abd al-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) placed Quraybah's affair in her own hands. Quraybah chose her husband, and that was not a divorce.
