Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Banu al-Mughirah have asked my permission to marry their daughter to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). I will not give them permission, I will not give permission, I will not give permission; but if Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) intends to marry their daughter, then let him divorce my daughter. For she is a part of my body; whoever troubles her troubles me, and whoever hurts her hurts me."

Al-Layth mentions this hadith with the same meaning, but he did not mention the words: "Whoever troubles Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) troubles me."

Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) proposed to the daughter of Abu Jahl, while Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), was married to him. When Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) heard of this, she came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: The people of your tribe are saying that you do not become angry for the sake of your daughters, and here is Ali about to marry the daughter of Abu Jahl. Miswar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon, I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "I gave (my daughter) in marriage to Abu al-As, and he spoke to me truthfully. Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) bint Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is a part of me, and I dislike that they should put her to trial. By Allah! The daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the daughter of the enemy of Allah can never be together in the marriage of one man." So Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) gave up the marriage.
(b) Miswar (may Allah be pleased with him) has narrated some additional words: "He spoke to me truthfully and fulfilled his promise to me; but I am not one to make the lawful unlawful or the unlawful lawful."
