Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utbah narrates from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), (concerning the time) when the slanderers said what they said, and then Allah, the Lord of Might, declared her innocent. Imam al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A group narrated (this) to me from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), some of whom retained it better than others, and I retained the hadith of each one of them who narrated to me from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), for their accounts confirm one another. They stated that Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to travel, he would cast lots among his wives, and whoever's lot came out would go with him (peace and blessings be upon him)." She said: "He (peace and blessings be upon him) cast lots during a military expedition, and my lot came out, so I set out with him (peace and blessings be upon him), and (by that time) the verses of hijab had been revealed."

Al-Qasim bin Muhammad narrates from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out (on a journey), he would cast lots among his wives. Once the lot fell to Sayyidah Aishah and Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with them both), so they both set out together. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) travelled at night, he would talk with Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): Will you not ride my camel tonight while I ride your camel, so that you will see and I will see? Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Certainly. So Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) rode the camel of Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the camel of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), while Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) was on it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) gave greetings and travelled with her until they halted, and Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) found him (peace and blessings be upon him) missing. When they halted, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) put her feet in the grass and said: O my Lord! Set a scorpion or a snake upon me to sting me; I do not have the courage to say anything to Your Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).
