Allah, exalted be His praise, says: "And as for those women whose disobedience you fear, admonish them, leave them alone in their beds, and strike them (lightly). Then if they obey you, do not seek a way (of harm) against them." [Surah al-Nisa: 34]

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said concerning this verse: (It is) the woman who is disobedient, treats her husband with contempt and does not obey his command. So Allah, the Lord of Might, commanded that he admonish her clearly and impress upon her his right over her. If she accepts, well and good; otherwise he should leave her alone in bed and not speak to her, without ending the marriage. This is hard upon her. If she comes back, well and good; otherwise he may strike her with a beating that leaves no mark, neither breaking a bone nor causing a wound. "Then if they obey you, do not seek a way (of harm) against them" [Surah al-Nisa: 34]. He says: When she obeys you, do not seek pretexts against her.
