Sayyiduna Ma'qil bin Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) says that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I have found a woman of lineage and wealth, but she does not bear children. Should I marry her?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade him. Then he came a second time, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him the same answer, that is, he forbade him. Then he came a third time and asked him (peace and blessings be upon him) the same question, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Marry a woman who is very loving and bears many children, for I will take pride in your great numbers before the nations."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best of your women are those who are loving, bear many children, are compliant and consoling, when they fear Allah; and the worst of women are those who display their adornment and are vain, and they are the hypocrites. None of them will enter Paradise except (as rare as) the crow with a red beak and feet."

Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him), addressing the people in a sermon, said: After faith in Allah Almighty, the best thing is a woman of good character who bears many children and is loving; and after disbelief in Allah Almighty, the worst thing is a wicked woman who is sharp-tongued and ill-natured. By Allah! Some women are obedient and cause no hardship, and some women are a yoke from which there is no release.

Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! After accepting Islam, nothing is more beneficial for a man than a woman of good character who is loving and bears many children. By Allah! After associating partners with Allah, nothing is worse for a man than an ill-tempered, ill-natured, foul-tongued woman. By Allah! Some women are a yoke around the neck from which there is no release, and some of them are obedient, from whom no harm comes.
