Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a man from Banu Makhzum to collect charity, and he said to Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him): "Accompany me; whatever share I get, you will get too." Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "No, not until I ask him (peace and blessings be upon him)." So he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Charity is not lawful for us, and the freed slaves of a people are from among them."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Arqam al-Zuhri was appointed over the charities, and he asked Abu Rafi' to accompany him. So he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him, and he said: "O Abu Rafi', charity is forbidden for the family of Muhammad, and the freed slave of a people is from among them."
The narration of Shu'bah from al-Hakam is more sound than the narration of Ibn Abi Layla; this Ibn Abi Layla had a poor memory and made many errors.

Ata' bin al-Sa'ib said: I brought some charity wealth to Umm Kulthum bint Ali (may Allah be pleased with her), and she said: Keep it away from our young men and our freed slaves, for Maymun or Mihran (may Allah be pleased with him), the freed slave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, we, the household, have been forbidden charity, and our freed slaves are from among us, so do not eat charity."
