It is narrated from Sayyiduna Qabisah bin Mukhariq (may Allah be pleased with him) that I fell into debt, and came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in this regard. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Qabisah! Stay until charity comes to us, and we will order it for you." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Qabisah! Asking is lawful only for three men: the man who is burdened with a debt and asks until the debt is paid, then he stops; the man who is struck by a sudden calamity and his wealth is ruined, and he asks until his affairs are set right, then he stops; and third, the man in severe need about whom three men of his people testify, and he asks until his living becomes easy, then he stops. Asking apart from this is unlawful; (whoever does so) consumes what is unlawful." He said this two or three times.

It is narrated from Fatimah bint Husayn bin Ali (may Allah have mercy on her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who asks has a right, even if he comes riding on a horse."

Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) says that Allah Almighty has made it obligatory upon the wealthy to help the poor with such an amount of their wealth as suffices them. If they are hungry or naked, and the wealthy did not do this, then Allah Almighty has the right to hold them to account on the Day of Resurrection and to punish them for it.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever asks while he has enough wealth to suffice him will come on the Day of Resurrection with marks of scratching, biting and wounds on his face." It was asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is sufficiency? He said: "Fifty dirhams or its equivalent in gold."
Yahya bin Adam said: Abdullah bin Uthman said to Sufyan: As I remember, Shu'bah would not narrate from Hakim bin Jubayr. Sufyan said: Zubayd also narrated it to us from Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid.

Ya'qub says: This is a far-fetched story; had the hadith of Hakim bin Jubayr been from Zubayd, it would not have remained hidden from the people of knowledge.

A man from Banu Asad says: My wife and I stopped at Baqi' al-Gharqad. My wife said to me: Go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and ask him for something to bring back (so that) we may eat. I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I saw a man who was asking, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying: "I have nothing to give you." When the man went away he was angry, and he was saying: "By Allah! You give to whomever you wish." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is angry, and I have nothing to give him." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever asks while he has an uqiyah or something equal to it has asked importunately." Al-Asadi says: I said (to myself): Our milch camel is better than an uqiyah, and an uqiyah is forty dirhams. He said: So I went back and did not ask him for anything. After that barley and raisins were brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us a share of it, until Allah Almighty made us free of need.

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) says: My father, Malik bin Sinan, was martyred in the Battle of Uhud and left us no inheritance. We fell into severe need, so my mother said to me: My son! Go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and ask him for something for us. I came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), greeted him and sat down; he (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting among his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). Then, turning towards me, he said: "Whoever seeks to be free of need, Allah Almighty will make him free of need; whoever seeks to be chaste, Allah Almighty will keep him chaste; and whoever seeks sufficiency, Allah will suffice him." Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I thought: He (peace and blessings be upon him) means no one but me. I went back and did not say anything. My mother asked me, and I told her the whole story. We remained patient, and Allah Almighty provided us with something by which we got by, until a need more severe than the first pressed upon us. My mother sent me to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to get something. I came, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the gathering of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them); I greeted and sat down. He turned towards me and said what he had said the first time, with these additional words: "Whoever asks while he has an uqiyah is one who asks importunately (that is, one who persists)." I thought to myself: I have al-Yaqutah, and she is worth more than an uqiyah; an uqiyah is forty dirhams. I went back and did not ask him (peace and blessings be upon him) anything.
Abu Ubayd says: al-Yaqutah is a she-camel.

Amr bin Shu'ayb narrates from his father, and he from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has forty dirhams and asks, it is as if he is one who begs from people importunately."

Sayyiduna Sahl bin al-Hanzaliyyah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that Uyaynah bin Hisn and al-Aqra' bin Habis (may Allah be pleased with them both) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The two of them asked him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that they be given what they had asked for, and he ordered Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) to write down for them what they had asked for. The narrator says that al-Aqra' (may Allah be pleased with him) wrapped his letter in his turban and went off, while Uyaynah (may Allah be pleased with him) took his letter and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! I am going to carry this letter to my people, and I myself do not know what is in it."
The narrator says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took it, looked into it and said: "In it is written what I ordered for you."
Then he mentioned the long hadith, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever asks while he has no need of it (that is, he does not need it) is only gathering more of the fire of Hell." The noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked: O Prophet of Allah! What is the sufficiency after which there is no room for asking? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That he has enough to eat his fill for a day and a night, or a night and a day."

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and complained of hunger, then he went back. The narrator says that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Go, until you bring something that you find." The narrator says that he went and brought a saddle-cloth and a cup. He said: "O Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Part of this saddle-cloth they used to spread out and part of it they used to wear, and this cup they used to drink from." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who will buy these from me for one dirham?" A man said: "O Prophet of Allah! I will buy it." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who will buy for more than one dirham?" A man said: "I will buy it for two dirhams." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are yours." He (peace and blessings be upon him) called the man and said: "Buy an axe with one dirham, and food for your family with one dirham." The narrator says that the man did so; then he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "Go to this valley, and cut wood and the like from it and work hard, and come to me after fifteen days." So he went, and he earned ten dirhams. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Buy food for your family with five dirhams." He said: "O Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Allah Almighty has blessed me in what you commanded me." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is better for you than coming on the Day of Resurrection with marks on your face because of asking. Indeed, asking is permissible only for three people: the one with a painful blood-money, a heavy debt, or extreme poverty."
