Ata bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Charity is not lawful for a wealthy person, except that five wealthy people may also take charity: (1) one who fights in the path of Allah, (2) the collector (who collects the charity), (3) a man burdened with a debt, (4) a man who bought the charity item with his own money, (5) a man who had a poor neighbour and gave him charity, then that poor man gave a gift to the one who had given the charity."

Sayyiduna Ibn al-Sa'idi al-Maliki (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) appointed me over the charity. When I had finished with it and handed it over to him, he ordered a wage for me. I said: I only worked for Allah and His Messenger, and my reward is with Allah. He said: Take what you are given, for I worked in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he paid me a wage, and I said the like of what you have said. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "When you are given something without asking for it, then eat (from it) and give charity."

It is narrated from Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) spoke about me to a man who had been appointed collector over the charity, so he excused me from going out with him and gave me my allowance, even though I stayed at home.
