Zayd bin Aslam narrated from his father that he said: Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) took charge in the first year, and he distributed among the people equally; each person received ten dirhams. Then he distributed in the second year, and they received twenty dirhams each, and a few dirhams were left over with him. He addressed the people and said: O people, a few dirhams of this wealth are left over. You have servants who toil for you and do your work; if you wish, we will give them a small gift. They said: Do so. So he gave each person five dirhams. If this report is sound, it shows the reason for which he distributed to slaves: it was a small gift given with their masters' permission, so it is as if he gave it to their masters.

It is narrated from Wuhayb that Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) was in charge of the treasury during the reign of Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came and saw Wuhayb helping them, and asked: Who is this? He said: My slave. Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I see that he helps them; allot two thousand for him. So Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) allotted him one thousand, or two thousand.

Harun bin Antarah narrated from his father that he said: I was present with Ali and Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them both); both of them used to give provision to people's slaves.
It is possible that they both gave their masters what suffices them and what suffices their slaves whom they cannot do without, and Zayd's slave was given because of the help he provided.
