It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Actions depend upon intention. Indeed, a person shall have only what he intended. So whoever's emigration was for Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), his emigration is for Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him); and whoever emigrated with the intention of some worldly gain that he would attain, or with the intention of a woman whom he would marry, his emigration is for that for which he emigrated."

Ubaydullah bin Salman (may Allah have mercy on him) says that one of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) related: When we conquered Khaybar, they took out their spoils, goods and captives and so on, and the people began selling their spoils. A man came and said: O Messenger of Allah! Today I have made such a profit that no one in this valley will have made more than me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Woe to you! What profit have you made?" He said: I kept on selling and buying until I made a profit of three hundred uqiyah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will tell you about the man who made a better profit." He said: O Messenger of Allah! What is it? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Two rak'ahs after the prayer."

Abu al-Ajfa' al-Sulami says that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon and said: "Another (thing): about those who are killed in these expeditions of yours, or who die, you say: So-and-so was martyred. Perhaps he had loaded both sides of his mount with gold or silver, seeking the world thereby, or trade. So do not say that of them; rather, say as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Whoever is killed in the path of Allah, or dies, he will go to Paradise.'"

Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Regarding those of whom you say that a man went out and fought, and then you say: So-and-so was martyred, whereas perhaps he went out having filled the back of his mount with dinars or dirhams for trade. So do not say this; rather, say just as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Whoever is killed in the path of Allah, he is in Paradise.'"
