The nearer grandmother inherits alone if she is on the mother's side, and they share if the nearer is on the father's side, which is the correct view of Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him)

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو، أنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ، ثنا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مِنْ كِتَابِهِ، أنا عَبْدَةُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، ثنا سَعِيدٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ قَالَ: " إِذَا اجْتَمَعَتْ جَدَّتَانِ فَبَيْنَهُمَا السُّدُسُ، وَإِذَا كَانَتِ الَّتِي مِنْ قِبَلِ الْأُمِّ أَقْرَبَ مِنَ الْأُخْرَى فَالسُّدُسُ لَهَا، وَإِذَا كَانَتِ الَّتِي مِنْ قِبَلِ الْأَبِ أَقْرَبَ فَهُوَ بَيْنَهُمَا ".
Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When two grandmothers come together, the sixth will be between them. When the one from the mother's side is nearer than the other, the sixth will be for the nearer one; and when the one from the father's side is nearer, the sixth will be between the two of them.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ، أنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكَّارٍ، ح وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْفَارِسِيُّ، أنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ الْخَلَّالِيُّ، أنا أَبُو يَعْلَى، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكَّارٍ، ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: فَإِنَّا قَدْ سَمِعْنَا أَنَّهَا " إِنْ كَانَتِ الَّتِي مِنْ قِبَلِ الْأُمِّ هِيَ أَقْعَدَهُمَا كَانَ لَهَا السُّدُسُ دُونَ الَّتِي مِنْ قِبَلِ الْأَبِ، وَإِنْ كَانَتَا مِنَ الْمُتَوَفَّى بِمَنْزِلَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ، أَوْ كَانَتِ الَّتِي مِنْ قِبَلِ الْأَبِ هِيَ أَقْعَدَهُمَا، فَإِنَّ السُّدُسَ يُقْسَمُ بَيْنَهُمَا نِصْفَيْنِ ".
Ibn Abi al-Zinad (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: We have heard that if the one from the mother's side is the nearer of the two (to the deceased), she is more entitled and the sixth is hers, to the exclusion of the one from the father's side; and if the two of them are of the same degree in relation to the deceased, or the one from the father's side is the nearer, the sixth will be divided between them in two halves.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، وَأَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو، قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، أنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، ثنا أَبُو أُمَيَّةَ بْنُ يَعْلَى الثَّقَفِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ وُهَيْبٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ: " إِذَا كَانَتِ الْجَدَّةُ مِنْ قِبَلِ الْأُمِّ أَقْعَدَ مِنَ الْجَدَّةِ مِنْ قِبَلِ الْأَبِ فَهِيَ أَحَقُّ بِالسُّدُسِ، وَإِذَا كَانَتِ الْجَدَّةُ مِنْ قِبَلِ الْأَبِ أَقْعَدَ أُشْرِكَتْ بَيْنَهَا وَبَيْنَ جَدَّةِ الْأُمِّ " قِيلَ: وَكَيْفَ صَارَتِ الْجَدَّةُ مِنْ قِبَلِ الْأُمِّ بِهَذِهِ الْمَنْزِلَةِ؟ قَالَ: " لِأَنَّ الْجَدَّاتِ إِنَّمَا أُطْعِمْنَ السُّدُسَ مِنْ قِبَلِ سُدُسِ الْأُمِّ ".
Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: When the grandmother from the mother's side is nearer, she is more entitled than the one from the father's side, and she alone is entitled to the sixth; and when the grandmother from the father's side is nearer, I will make the two of them partners. It was said: How did the grandmother from the mother's side reach this position? He said: Because the share of the grandmothers is the sixth on account of the mother's sixth.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو، أنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى، أنا وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ، عَنْ خَارِجَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ قَالَ: " إِذَا كَانَتِ الْجَدَّةُ مِنْ قِبَلِ الْأُمِّ أَقْعَدَ مِنَ الْجَدَّةِ مِنْ قِبَلِ الْأَبِ كَانَ لَهَا السُّدُسُ، وَإِذَا كَانَتِ الْجَدَّةُ مِنْ قِبَلِ الْأُمِّ هِيَ أَقْعَدَ مِنَ الْجَدَّةِ مِنَ الْأَبِ جُعِلَ السُّدُسُ بَيْنَهُمَا " قَالَ: وَأنا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى، أنا ⦗٣٩٠⦘ وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ فِطْرٍ، عَنْ شَيْخٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ عَنْ خَارِجَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ.
Kharijah bin Zayd (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When the grandmother from the mother's side is nearer than the one from the father's side, she has the greater right to the sixth; and when the grandmother from the father's side is nearer than the one from the mother's side, the two of them will share in the sixth.
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ، أنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ، ثنا وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ، أنا خَالِدٌ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ، عَنْ عَمَّارِ بْنِ أَبِي عَمَّارٍ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ قَالَ: " إِذَا كَانَتِ الْجَدَّةُ مِنْ قِبَلِ الْأُمِّ أَقْعَدَ فَهِيَ أَحَقُّ بِالسُّدُسِ ".
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the grandmother from the mother's side is nearer, she alone has the right to the sixth.
