Qabisah bin Dhu'ayb (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A grandmother (paternal or maternal) came to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked about her inheritance. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said to her: "There is nothing for you in the Book of Allah, and I do not know of anything for you in the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Go back until I ask the people." Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I was present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the grandmother a sixth." Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Was anyone else with you?" Then Muhammad bin Maslamah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said the same as Mughirah, so Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) granted it to her. Then another grandmother came to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him about her inheritance. He said: "There is nothing for you in the Book of Allah, and the judgement that was given was for someone other than you, and I cannot add anything to the fixed shares. But it is that same sixth: if the two of you come together in it, it is between you both, and whichever of you is alone, it is hers." [Sahih]
