Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I fell ill, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) visited me. I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! What ruling shall I make concerning my wealth? He (peace and blessings be upon him) had not yet said anything to me when the verse was revealed: "They ask you for a ruling. Say: Allah gives you a ruling concerning kalalah" [Surah al-Nisa: 176].

Ibn al-Munkadir (may Allah have mercy on him) heard Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: I fell ill, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) visited me; Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was with him as well, and they came walking. I was unconscious and did not speak to him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution and sprinkled the water of his ablution on me. When I came to, I said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! What shall I do with my wealth, as I have sisters?" Then the verse of inheritance was revealed: "They ask you for a ruling. Say: Allah gives you a ruling concerning kalalah" [Surah al-Nisa: 176], meaning one who has no children but has sisters. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Only kalalah will inherit from me; so he called those who would inherit from him kalalah.
The Shaykh said: The verse of inheritance was revealed concerning Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both); he had neither children nor parents, because his father had been martyred on the day of Uhud, and this verse was revealed after that.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) that the last verse to be revealed was: "They ask you for a ruling. Say: Allah gives you a ruling concerning kalalah" [Surah al-Nisa: 176].

Ma'dan bin Abi Talhah (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon, and in it he said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about the verse of kalalah again and again, more than I asked about anything else, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) answered me just as sternly, until he (peace and blessings be upon him) struck my chest and said: "Is not the verse that was revealed in the summer, which is at the end of Surah al-Nisa, sufficient for you: 'They ask you for a ruling. Say: Allah gives you a ruling concerning kalalah' [Surah al-Nisa: 176]?" Soon I will give such a ruling concerning kalalah that both those who read and those who do not read will know it; and it (kalalah) is one who has no father, as I understand it.

Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! They ask you about kalalah; so what is kalalah?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The verse revealed in the summer will suffice you." I said to Abu Ishaq: Kalalah is one who dies leaving neither children nor parents. That is how they understood it.

Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked: O Messenger of Allah! "They ask you for a ruling. Say: Allah gives you a ruling concerning kalalah" [Surah al-Nisa: 176]. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever leaves neither children nor parents, his heirs are kalalah."
Abu Dawud (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It is reported from al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning kalalah: "The verse of the summer will suffice you."
This (report of al-Bara') is the well-known one; the report of Abu Ishaq from Abu Salamah is munqati' (with a broken chain) and is not ma'ruf (well known).

It is narrated from al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Kalalah is one who has no children." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Kalalah is one who has neither children nor parents." When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was stabbed, he said: "I feel ashamed to differ with Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him); kalalah is one who has neither children nor parents."

Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: There was a time when I did not know what kalalah is; and kalalah is one who has neither a father nor children.

Al-Hasan bin Muhammad said: I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about kalalah. He said: "It is one who has neither parents nor children." He said: I said: Allah Almighty says: "If a man dies having no child" [Surah al-Nisa: 176]. So he rebuked me and became angry.

Al-Hasan bin Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about kalalah, and he said: "One who has neither children nor parents." I said: Allah says: "If a man dies having no child but has a sister" [Surah al-Nisa: 176]. He became angry, rebuked me, and then said: "One who has neither children nor parents."

Tawus (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I heard Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) say: "I was the last of the people to be with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and I heard him say: 'The view is what I said.' I said: 'What did you say?' He said: 'Kalalah is one who has no child.'"
This is how it is in this narration. What we have narrated from Umar and Ibn Abbas on the explanation of kalalah is closer to the evidences of the Book and the Sunnah than this narration, and more worthy of being correct, because this narration stands alone while the narrations from them both consistently say otherwise; and Allah knows best.

Murrah said that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "There are three things which, had the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) explained them clearly, would have been dearer to me than red camels: the caliphate, kalalah, and usury (riba)." I said to Murrah: Who doubts about kalalah, that it is other than the child and the father? Murrah replied: They doubt about the father.

Kharijah bin Zayd (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father that the meanings and principles of these inheritance shares are from Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), and the explanation of these meanings is from Abu al-Zinad (may Allah have mercy on him). He said: He would not make uterine brothers heirs alongside children, son's children, the father or the grandfather (whether the children or son's children are male or female); he would not make full brothers heirs alongside a male child, a son's male child or the father; and he would make paternal half-brothers, when none of the full siblings are with them, equal to full brothers in inheritance. When full brothers and paternal half-brothers come together and there is a male among the full siblings, then the paternal half-brothers have no inheritance alongside him.
