Muhammad bin al-Munkadir (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I heard Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me while I was ill. He (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution (wudu) and sprinkled some of the water of his ablution on me. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Only a kalalah (one with neither parent nor child) will inherit from me, so how will the inheritance be divided? Then the verse of inheritance was revealed.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for water, performed ablution (wudu), and then sprinkled some of it on me. When I recovered, I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! What shall I do with my wealth? Then this verse was revealed: "Allah instructs you concerning your children: for the male, the like of the share of two females." [Surah al-Nisa: 11].

Kharijah bin Zayd (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father, Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), that the meanings and principles of these fara'id (laws of inheritance) are from Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), and the explanation is the explanation of Abu al-Zinad (may Allah have mercy on him) of the meanings of Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: The son of a uterine brother (a brother through the mother) does not inherit anything by that kinship of his; nor does the grandmother who is the mother of the mother's father inherit, nor the maternal aunt; I think he said: nor the grandfather who is the mother's father; nor the daughter of a full brother, nor the paternal aunt who is the father's full sister, nor the maternal aunt, nor anyone more distant in lineage from the deceased among those mentioned in this book. None of them inherits anything by that kinship of his.

A freed slave (mawla) of Quraysh who was called Ibn Marsa said: I was sitting with Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). When he had led the Zuhr prayer, he said: O Yarfa! Bring the letter, meaning a letter which Umar had written concerning the paternal aunt, asking about her and seeking Allah's guidance (istikharah) about her. When Yarfa brought that letter, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) called for a metal vessel or a cup with water in it, and he erased that letter in it. Then he said: If Allah had been pleased with you, He would have kept you; if Allah had been pleased with you, He would have kept you.

Muhammad bin Abi Bakr bin Amr bin Hazm heard his father say many times: Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: How strange is the matter of the paternal aunt: her nephews inherit from her, but she does not inherit.
The opposite of this has also been narrated from Umar, but the narration of the people of Madinah is more worthy of being authentic, and Allah knows best.
