It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Khalid al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while I was with him, and asked him about a found item. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Recognise its container and its tie, then announce it for a year. If its owner comes (give it to him); otherwise it is for you to deal with." He asked: "A stray sheep?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is for you, or for your brother, or for the wolf." He asked: "A stray camel?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It has its hooves and its water supply with it; it goes down to water and eats the leaves of trees until its owner finds it."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Khalid al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about a found item, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Announce it for a year. Then recognise its container and its tie well. Then include it in your spending. If its owner comes, give it to him." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, what is your view about stray sheep?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are for you, or for your brother, or for the wolf." He said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), what is the ruling on a stray camel?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry, until his (peace and blessings be upon him) blessed face turned red, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What have you to do with it? It has its hooves and its water supply with it, until its owner finds it."

He asked about a stray camel, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What have you to do with it! Leave it, for it has its hooves and its water supply with it; it can go down to water and eat the leaves of trees until its owner finds it." He asked about a sheep, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take it, for it is for you, or for your brother, or for the wolf."

He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It has its hooves and its water supply with it; the wolf cannot eat it; it drinks water and can eat the leaves of trees. Leave it in its place until the one looking for it comes." He asked about a stray sheep, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is for you, or for your brother, or for the wolf; keep hold of it until the one looking for it comes." He said: "And a found item that we come across?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever is in an inhabited place or on a frequented road, announce it for a year; if the one looking for it comes, give it to him, otherwise it is yours." He asked: "O Messenger of Allah, what is found in an ancient ruined place?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In it and in buried treasure (rikaz) there is one fifth (khumus)." In one narration he said: "What is your view about a stray sheep?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is food to be eaten, for you, or for your brother, or for the wolf. Keep your brother's stray for him."

It is narrated from Abu al-Juwayriyah that he said: I heard a Bedouin from Banu Sulaym ask Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about stray animals: What is your view about stray animals? He said: Whoever eats from stray animals is astray. He asked again: What is your view about stray animals? He said: Whoever eats from stray animals is astray. Then the man fell silent, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) became busy giving rulings to the people — Abu al-Juwayriyah says: many rulings which I could not memorise. Then the Bedouin said: I see that you have answered all the people except me; do you think I will get a turn? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Woe to you! Do not ask this question. And he said: How grave your question is! And he said: Seek Allah's forgiveness, turn to Him, and regard what you have done as a grave matter. (Then) he said: Do you know concerning what this verse was revealed: "O you who believe, do not ask about things which, if they were made plain to you, would trouble you" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 101]? When he had finished reciting the verse, he said: People used to ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) questions mockingly. A man would say: Who is my father? And a man whose she-camel had strayed would say: Where is my she-camel? So Allah Almighty revealed this verse concerning it.
