أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ بْنُ عَبْدَانَ، أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الصَّفَّارُ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ نَاجِيَةَ، ثنا أَبُو هَمَّامٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو، أَنَّ بُكَيْرًا حَدَّثَهُ، أَنَّ عَاصِمَ بْنَ عُمَرَ بْنِ قَتَادَةَ حَدَّثَهُ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عُبَيْدَ اللهِ الْخَوْلَانِيَّ يَذْكُرُ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ عِنْدَ قَوْلِ النَّاسِ فِيهِ حِينَ بَنَى مَسْجِدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: إِنَّكُمْ قَدْ أَكْثَرْتُمْ، وَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ⦗٢٧٦⦘ يَقُولُ: " مَنْ بَنَى لِلَّهِ مَسْجِدًا "، قَالَ بُكَيْرٌ: أَحْسِبُهُ قَالَ: " يَبْتَغِي بِهِ وَجْهَ اللهِ بَنَى اللهُ لَهُ بَيْتًا فِي الْجَنَّةِ " رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ، وَرَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ عَنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ وَغَيْرِهِ، كُلُّهُمْ عَنِ ابْنِ وَهْبٍ.
Ubaydullah al-Khawlani (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned that he heard Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), when the people were talking about him while he was building the mosque of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), say: "You have talked too much. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever builds a mosque for Allah' - Bukayr, the narrator, said: I think Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'seeking thereby the Face of Allah - Allah will build for him a house in Paradise.'"
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ الْفَقِيهُ، أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ الْقَطَّانُ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْهِلَالِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْحَمِيدِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ مَحْمُودِ بْنِ لَبِيدٍ قَالَ: لَمَّا أَرَادَ عُثْمَانُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَنْ يَبْنِيَ الْمَسْجِدَ كَرِهَ النَّاسُ ذَلِكَ وَأَرَادُوا أَنْ يَدَعَهُ، فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: " مَنْ بَنَى مَسْجِدًا لِلَّهِ بَنَى الله لَهُ بَيْتًا فِي الْجَنَّةِ " رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ زُهَيْرِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ وَغَيْرِهِ، عَنْ أَبِي عَاصِمٍ.
It is reported from Mahmud bin Labid (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to build the mosque, the people disliked it and wanted him to leave it as it was. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise.'"
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ حَلِيمٍ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ، أنبأ أَبُو الْمُوَجِّهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْفَزَارِيُّ، أنبأ عَبْدَانُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، أَنَّ عُثْمَانَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ حَيْثُ حُوصِرَ أَشْرَفَ عَلَيْهِمْ فَقَالَ: أَنْشُدُكُمُ اللهَ، وَلَا أَنْشُدُ إِلَّا أَصْحَابَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، تَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " مَنْ حَفَرَ بِئْرَ رُومَةَ فَلَهُ الْجَنَّةُ "، فَحَفَرْتُهَا؟ أَلَسْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: " مَنْ جَهَّزَ جَيْشَ الْعُسْرَةِ فَلَهُ الْجَنَّةُ "، فَجَهَّزْتُهُمْ؟ فَصَدَّقُوهُ بِمَا قَالَ رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ عَبْدَانَ.
Abu Abd al-Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was besieged, Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) looked down upon them from the roof and said: "I adjure you by Allah - and I adjure only the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) - you know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Whoever digs the well of Rumah (Bi'r Rumah), Paradise is for him,' and I dug it. Do you not know that he said: 'Whoever equips the Army of Hardship (Jaysh al-'Usrah - the army of the Battle of Tabuk), Paradise is for him,' and I equipped it?" They affirmed what he said.
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ بِشْرَانَ الْعَدْلُ بِبَغْدَادَ، أنبأ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمِصْرِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مَعْبَدٍ، ثنا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَبِي أُنَيْسَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السُّلَمِيِّ قَالَ: لَمَّا حُصِرَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ وَأُحِيطَ بِدَارِهِ أَشْرَفَ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ: أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللهِ، هَلْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ عَلَى جَبَلِ حِرَاءَ فَقَالَ: " اسْكُنْ حِرَاءُ، فَمَا عَلَيْكَ إِلَّا نَبِيٌّ أَوْ صِدِّيقٌ أَوْ شَهِيدٌ "؟ قَالُوا: اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ. قَالَ: أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللهِ، هَلْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ فِي غَزْوَةِ الْعُسْرَةِ: " مَنْ يُنْفِقُ نَفَقَةً مُتَقَبَّلَةً؟ " وَالنَّاسُ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُعْسِرُونَ مَجْهُودُونَ، فَجَهَّزْتُ ثُلُثَ ذَلِكَ الْجَيْشِ مِنْ مَالِي؟ قَالُوا: اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ. ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللهِ، هَلْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رُومَةَ لَمْ يَكُنْ يَشْرَبُ مِنْهَا أَحَدٌ إِلَّا بِثَمَنٍ، فَابْتَعْتُهَا بِمَالِي فَجَعَلْتُهَا لِلْغَنِيِّ وَالْفَقِيرِ وَابْنِ السَّبِيلِ؟ قَالُوا: اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ فِي أَشْيَاءَ عَدَّدَهَا.
Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) was besieged and his house was surrounded, he looked out over the people and said: "I adjure you by Allah, do you know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was on the mountain of Hira and said: 'Be still, Hira! For upon you there is none but a Prophet, a Siddiq, or a martyr'?" They answered yes.
Then he said: "I adjure you by Allah, (do you know) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said during the Battle of Tabuk: 'Who will spend an expenditure that will be accepted?' - and the people on that day were in hardship - and I bore the expense of one third of that army from my own wealth?" They answered yes. Then he said: "I adjure you by Allah, (do you know that) at a time when water was bought to be drunk, I bought the well of Rumah and endowed it for everyone - for the rich, the poor and the wayfarer?" They answered yes, and he enumerated a number of things.
Then he said: "I adjure you by Allah, (do you know) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said during the Battle of Tabuk: 'Who will spend an expenditure that will be accepted?' - and the people on that day were in hardship - and I bore the expense of one third of that army from my own wealth?" They answered yes. Then he said: "I adjure you by Allah, (do you know that) at a time when water was bought to be drunk, I bought the well of Rumah and endowed it for everyone - for the rich, the poor and the wayfarer?" أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ، أنبأ أَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ ⦗٢٧٧⦘ الْأَعْرَابِيِّ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الصَّبَّاحِ الزَّعْفَرَانِيُّ، ثنا عَفَّانُ، ثنا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، ثنا حُصَيْنٌ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ جَاوَانَ، عَنِ الْأَحْنَفِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ فِي قِصَّةٍ ذَكَرَهَا قَالَ: جَاءَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ: أَهَا هُنَا عَلِيٌّ؟ قَالُوا: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: أَهَا هُنَا طَلْحَةُ؟ قَالُوا: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: أَهَا هُنَا الزُّبَيْرُ؟ قَالُوا: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: أَهَا هُنَا سَعْدٌ؟ قَالُوا: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: نَشَدْتُكُمْ بِاللهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ، أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " مَنْ يَبْتَاعُ مِرْبَدَ بَنِي فُلَانٍ غَفَرَ اللهُ لَهُ "، فَابْتَعْتُهُ، قَالَ: أَحْسِبُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: بِعِشْرِينَ أَوْ بِخَمْسَةٍ وَعِشْرِينَ أَلْفًا، فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقُلْتُ: قَدِ ابْتَعْتُهُ، قَالَ: " اجْعَلْهُ فِي مَسْجِدِنَا، وَأَجْرُهُ لَكَ "؟ قَالُوا: نَعَمْ. قَالَ: نَشَدْتُكُمْ بِاللهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ، أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " مَنْ يَبْتَاعُ بِئْرَ رُومَةَ غَفَرَ اللهُ لَهُ "، فَابْتَعْتُهَا بِكَذَا وَكَذَا، فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقُلْتُ: إِنِّي ابْتَعْتُ بِئْرَ رُومَةَ، قَالَ: " اجْعَلْهَا سِقَايَةً لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ، وَأَجْرُهَا لَكَ "؟ قَالُوا: نَعَمْ. قَالَ: نَشَدْتُكُمْ بِاللهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ، تَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَظَرَ فِي وُجُوهِ الْقَوْمِ يَوْمَ جَيْشِ الْعُسْرَةِ، فَقَالَ: " مَنْ يُجَهِّزُ هَؤُلَاءِ غَفَرَ اللهُ لَهُ "، فَجَهَّزْتُهُمْ حَتَّى مَا يَفْقِدُونَ خِطَامًا وَلَا عِقَالًا؟ قَالُوا: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: اللهُمُ اشْهَدِ، اللهُمَّ اشْهَدِ، اللهُمُ اشْهَدْ، وَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ.
Ahnaf bin Qays (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated a story in which Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came and asked: "Is Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) here?" They said: "Yes." Then he asked about Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him), and they said: "Yes." Then he asked: "Is al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) here?" They said: "Yes." Then he asked: "Is Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) here?" They said: "Yes." Then he said: "I adjure you by Allah, besides whom there is no god: do you know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Whoever buys the date-drying yard of Banu so-and-so, Allah will forgive him,' so I bought it - the narrator said: I think he said: for twenty or twenty-five thousand - then I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: 'I have bought it,' and he said: 'Add it to our mosque, and its reward is yours'?" They said: "Yes." He said: "I adjure you by Allah, besides whom there is no god: do you know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Whoever buys the well of Rumah, Allah will forgive him,' so I bought it. Then I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: 'I have bought the well of Rumah,' and he said: 'Make it a source of drinking water for the Muslims, and its reward is yours'?" They answered yes. Then he said: "I adjure you by Allah, besides whom there is no god: you know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at the faces of the army of the Battle of Tabuk and said: 'Whoever equips this army, Allah will forgive him.' So I equipped them until they did not lack even a halter or a hobbling rope?" They answered yes. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Allah, be witness!" He said these words three times.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مَرْزُوقٍ الْبَصْرِيُّ، ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي الْحَجَّاجِ، عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ، عَنْ ثُمَامَةَ بْنِ حَزْنٍ الْقُشَيْرِيِّ قَالَ: شَهِدْتُ الدَّارَ وَأَشْرَفَ عَلَيْهِمْ عُثْمَانُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، فَقَالَ: أَنْشُدُكُمُ اللهَ وَالْإِسْلَامَ، هَلْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدِمَ الْمَدِينَةَ لَيْسَ فِيهَا مَاءٌ يُسْتَعْذَبُ غَيْرُ بِئْرِ رُومَةَ فَقَالَ: " مَنْ يَشْتَرِي بِئْرَ رُومَةَ فَيَكُونُ دَلْوُهُ فِيهَا مَعَ دِلَاءِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ بِخَيْرٍ لَهُ مِنْهَا فِي الْجَنَّةِ؟ " فَاشْتَرَيْتُهَا مِنْ صُلْبِ مَالِي، قَالَ: وَأَنْتُمُ الْيَوْمَ تَمْنَعُونَنِي أَنْ أَشْرَبَ مِنْهَا حَتَّى أَشْرَبَ مِنْ مَاءِ الْبَحْرِ قَالُوا: اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ، قَالَ: أَنْشُدُكُمُ اللهَ وَالْإِسْلَامَ، هَلْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ الْمَسْجِدَ كَانَ ضَاقَ بِأَهْلِهِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " مَنْ يَشْتَرِي بُقْعَةَ آلِ فُلَانٍ بِخَيْرٍ لَهُ مِنْهَا فِي الْجَنَّةِ؟ " فَاشْتَرَيْتُهَا مِنْ مَالِي، أَوْ قَالَ: مِنْ صُلْبِ مَالِي، فَزِدْتُهَا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ، فَأَنْتُمُ الْيَوْمَ تَمْنَعُونَنِي أَنْ أُصَلِّيَ فِيهَا؟ قَالُوا: اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ، وَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ فِي تَجْهِيزِ جَيْشِ الْعُسْرَةِ وَقِصَّةِ ثَبِيرٍ.
Thumamah bin Hazn al-Qushayri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I was present at the house, and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) looked out over the people and said: "I adjure you by Allah and by Islam, do you know that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah there was no sweet water anywhere except the well of Rumah (Bi'r Rumah), and he said: 'Whoever buys the well of Rumah - his bucket will be in it along with the buckets of the Muslims - will have something better than it in Paradise'? I bought it from my own personal wealth, yet today you prevent me from drinking its water, so that I drink the water of the sea!" They answered yes. Then he said: "I adjure you by Allah and by Islam, do you know that the mosque had become too small, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Whoever buys the plot of the family of so-and-so will have something better than it in Paradise'? So I bought it with my wealth and added it to the mosque, yet today you prevent me from praying in that very mosque!" They answered yes.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْقَطَّانُ بِبَغْدَادَ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ الْمُقْرِئُ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ قُتَيْبَةَ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْجَرَّاحِ الْغَزِّيُّ، ثنا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ، عَنْ شُعَيْبِ بْنِ رُزَيْقٍ وَغَيْرِهِ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ الْخُرَاسَانِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، وَسَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: لَمَّا أَرَادَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَنْ يَزِيدَ فِي مَسْجِدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَقَعَتْ زِيَادَتُهُ عَلَى دَارِ الْعَبَّاسِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، فَأَرَادَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَنْ يُدْخِلَهَا فِي مَسْجِدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَيُعَوِّضَهُ مِنْهَا، فَأَبَى وَقَالَ: قَطِيعَةُ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَاخْتَلَفَا فَجَعَلَا بَيْنَهُمَا أُبِيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ ⦗٢٧٨⦘ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمْ، فَأَتَيَاهُ فِي مَنْزِلِهِ، وَكَانَ يُسَمَّى سَيِّدَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، فَأَمَرَ لَهُمَا بِوِسَادَةٍ فَأُلْقِيَتْ لَهُمَا، فَجَلَسَا عَلَيْهَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ، فَذَكَرَ عُمَرُ مَا أَرَادَ، وَذَكَرَ الْعَبَّاسُ قَطِيعَةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ أُبَيٌّ: " إِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَمَرَ عَبْدَهُ وَنَبِيَّهُ دَاوُدَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ أَنْ يَبْنِيَ لَهُ بَيْتًا، قَالَ: أَيْ رَبِّ، وَأَيْنَ هَذَا الْبَيْتُ؟ قَالَ: حَيْثُ تَرَى الْمَلَكَ شَاهِرًا سَيْفَهُ، فَرَآهُ عَلَى الصَّخْرَةِ، وَإِذَا مَا هُنَاكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَنْدَرٌ لِغُلَامٍ مِنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ، فَأَتَاهُ دَاوُدُ فَقَالَ: إِنِّي قَدْ أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أَبْنِيَ هَذَا الْمَكَانَ بَيْتًا لِلَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، فَقَالَ لَهُ الْفَتَى: آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ تَأْخُذَهَا مِنِّي بِغَيْرِ رِضَايَ؟ قَالَ: لَا، فَأَوْحَى اللهُ إِلَى دَاوُدَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ أَنِّي قَدْ جَعَلْتُ فِي يَدِكَ خَزَائِنَ الْأَرْضِ فَأَرْضِهِ، فَأَتَاهُ دَاوُدُ فَقَالَ: إِنِّي قَدْ أُمِرْتُ بِرِضَاكَ، فَلَكَ بِهَا قِنْطَارٌ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ، قَالَ: قَدْ قَبِلْتُ يَا دَاوُدُ، وَهِيَ خَيْرٌ أَمِ الْقِنْطَارُ؟ قَالَ: بَلْ هِيَ خَيْرٌ، قَالَ: فَأَرْضِي، قَالَ: فَلَكَ بِهَا ثَلَاثُ قَنَاطِيرَ، قَالَ: فَلَمْ يَزَلْ يُشَدِّدُ عَلَى دَاوُدَ حَتَّى رَضِيَ مِنْهُ بِتِسْعِ قَنَاطِيرَ " قَالَ الْعَبَّاسُ: اللهُمَّ لَا آخُذُ لَهَا ثَوَابًا وَقَدْ تَصَدَّقْتُ بِهَا عَلَى جَمَاعَةِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، فَقَبِلَهَا عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ مِنْهُ فَأَدْخَلَهَا فِي مَسْجِدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to enlarge the mosque of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the extension reached the house of Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wanted to include it in the mosque and give him compensation for it, but Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) refused and said: "This is land granted by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." The two disagreed, and they appointed Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) to judge between them. They both came to him at his home - he used to be called the Master of the Muslims. Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered that a cushion be laid out for them, and the two of them sat before Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned what he intended, and Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned that it was a plot granted by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said (narrating a report): "Allah Almighty commanded His servant and Prophet Dawud (peace be upon him) to build a house for Him. Dawud (peace be upon him) said: 'O my Lord, where shall this house be?' Allah said: 'Where you see the angel drawing his sword.' Dawud (peace be upon him) saw him on the rock, and at that time there was a threshing floor there belonging to a youth of the Children of Israel.
Dawud (peace be upon him) came to him and said: 'I have been commanded to build a house for Allah in this place.' The young man said: 'Has Allah commanded you to take it from me without my consent?' Dawud (peace be upon him) said: 'No.' Then Allah revealed to Dawud (peace be upon him): 'I have placed the treasures of the earth in your hand, so satisfy him.' So Dawud (peace be upon him) came to him and said: 'I have been commanded to satisfy you; you shall have a qintar of gold for it.' He said: 'I accept, O Dawud - but is it (the land) better, or the qintar?' Dawud (peace be upon him) said: 'Rather, it is better.' He said: 'Then satisfy me.' Dawud (peace be upon him) said: 'You shall have three qintars for it.' He kept pressing Dawud (peace be upon him) hard until he was satisfied with nine qintars." Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Allah, I will take no compensation for it, and I have given it in charity to the community of the Muslims." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted it from him and included it in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْقَطَّانُ بِبَغْدَادَ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ دَرَسْتَوَيْهِ، ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ، ثنا يُوسُفُ بْنُ كَامِلٍ الْعَطَّارُ، ثنا حَمَّادٌ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ يُوسُفَ بْنِ مِهْرَانَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: كَانَتْ لِلْعَبَّاسِ دَارٌ إِلَى جَنْبِ الْمَسْجِدِ فِي الْمَدِينَةِ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: بِعْنِيهَا أَوْ هَبْهَا لِي؛ حَتَّى أُدْخِلَهَا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ " فَأَبَى، فَقَالَ: اجْعَلْ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَكَ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَجَعَلَا بَيْنَهُمَا أُبِيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ، فَقَضَى لِلْعَبَّاسِ عَلَى عُمَرَ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: مَا أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَجْرَأَ عَلَيَّ مِنْكَ، فَقَالَ أُبِيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ: أَوْ أَنْصَحَ لَكَ مِنِّي، ثُمَّ قَالَ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، أَمَا بَلَغَكَ حَدِيثُ دَاوُدَ أَنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَمَرَهُ بِبِنَاءِ بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ، فَأَدْخَلَ فِيهِ بَيْتَ امْرَأَةٍ بِغَيْرِ إِذْنِهَا، فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ حُجَزَ الرِّجَالِ مَنَعَهُ اللهُ بِنَاءَهُ، قَالَ دَاوُدُ: أَيْ رَبِّ، إِنْ مَنَعْتَنِي بِنَاءَهُ، فَاجْعَلْهُ فِي خَلَفِي. فَقَالَ الْعَبَّاسُ: " أَلَيْسَ قَدْ قَضَيْتَ لِي بِهَا وَصَارَتْ لِي؟ " قَالَ: بَلَى، قَالَ: " فَإِنِّي أُشْهِدُكَ أَنِّي قَدْ جَعَلْتُهَا لِلَّهِ ".
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) had a house in Madinah beside the mosque. Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Sell it to me or gift it to me so that I may include it in the mosque." He refused and said: "Appoint someone from among the Companions of the Prophet as judge between me and you." They appointed Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) as judge, and he ruled in favour of Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "None of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is bolder against me than you." Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "(Or rather) I am more sincere towards you." Then he said: "O Commander of the Believers, has the report of Dawud not reached you, that Allah Almighty commanded him to build His house, Bayt al-Maqdis, and Dawud included the house of a woman in it without her permission? When (the building) reached the height of men's waists, Allah Almighty forbade him from building it. Dawud said: 'O my Lord, if You have prevented me, then command someone after me to build it.'" Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Did you not rule in my favour, so that it became mine?" Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Indeed!" Then Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I make you a witness that I have endowed that house for Allah."
