Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that a man of the Ansar disputed with Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) over the water channel of the Harrah, with which they watered the date palms. Then they put their dispute before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Ansari said: "Let the water pass on," but Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) refused. The two of them came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Zubayr! Water (your garden) first, then let it go to your neighbour." The Ansari became angry and said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Is it because Zubayr is the son of your paternal aunt?" The colour of the face of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) changed. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Zubayr! Water (your garden), then hold back the water until it rises to the walls." Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! I think this verse was revealed concerning that: 'But no, by your Lord, they will not believe until they make you judge concerning their disputes' [Surah al-Nisa: 65]."

Urwah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) had a dispute with a man of the Ansar over the water channel of the Harrah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Zubayr! Water (your garden), then let it go to your neighbour." The Ansari said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Is it because Zubayr is the son of your paternal aunt?" The colour of the face of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) changed, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Zubayr! Water (your garden), then hold back the water until it rises to the walls, then let it go to your neighbour." Because of the Ansari's objection, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) his full right, whereas before that there had been leeway for both of them. Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I think this verse was revealed concerning that: 'But no, by your Lord, they will not believe until they make you judge' [Surah al-Nisa: 65]." He said: I heard from someone other than al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) that the meaning of the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), 'Then hold back the water until it rises to the walls,' was that it should reach the ankles.

It is like the previous hadith. At its end Ibn Shihab (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Ansar and the people estimated what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Water, then hold back until the water returns to the walls," to be up to the ankles. Ibn Shihab also said: (It is) an ikhadh (a pool) in the Harrah that holds back water.

Tha'labah bin Abi Malik heard from his elders that there was a man of Quraysh who had a share in Banu Qurayzah. He came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with a dispute over the torrent channel of Mahzur, whose water they used to share. He (peace and blessings be upon him) judged between them: "When the water reaches the ankles, the upper one should not withhold it from the lower one."

Amr bin Shu'ayb narrates from his father, from his grandfather (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr, may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave judgement concerning the torrent channel of Mahzur: "The water is to be held until it reaches the ankles, then the upper one sends it on to the lower one."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave judgement concerning the watering channel (of date palms): "The higher one comes before the lower one, and the water is held in it up to the ankles; then the water is sent on to the lower one next to it." In the same way the gardens are watered.
Ishaq bin Yahya bin Ubadah's narration (from Ubadah) is mursal.
