It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived on the morning of the fourth of Dhul-Hijjah, reciting the talbiyah for Hajj without combining anything else with it. When we reached Makkah, at his (peace and blessings be upon him) command we turned our Hajj into Umrah, and our wives also became lawful for us. At this, people began to talk.
Ata' (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Some people began to say: "Will one of us go to Mina with semen dripping from his private part?" This reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up to deliver a sermon and said: "It has reached me that some people are saying such things. By Allah, I fear Allah more than they do. Had I known beforehand what I have come to know now, I would not have brought the sacrificial animals with me, and had the sacrificial animals not been with me, I too would have come out of ihram." At this, Sayyiduna Suraqah bin Ju'shum (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, is this ruling for us specifically, or forever?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather it is forever." The narrator said: Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) came. One of Tawus and Ata' (may Allah have mercy on them) says that he said: 'Labbayk bima ahalla bihi Rasulullah' (Here I am, with that for which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered ihram), and the other says that he said: 'Labbayk bi-hajjati Rasulillah' (Here I am, with the Hajj of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to remain in his ihram and made him a partner in his sacrificial animals.
