Amr bin al-Sharid narrates from his father (Sayyiduna al-Sharid, may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When someone who has the means delays paying his debt, it becomes lawful (to speak against) his honour and to punish him." Sufyan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: His honour becoming lawful means that he (the creditor) may say: He has wronged me in my right; and punishment becoming permissible means that he may be imprisoned.

The same hadith is also reported through Muhammad bin Maymun. Ibn al-Mubarak (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Makes his honour lawful" means that he may be spoken to harshly, and "his punishment" means that he may be imprisoned for it.
