Abu al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) about the price of a dog and a cat, and he replied that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) "rebuked people against it."

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) "forbade eating a cat and taking its price." Imam Abu Dawud (may Allah have mercy on him) recorded in his Sunan, through the chain of Abdur Razzaq, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) "forbade the price of a cat."

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) "forbade the price of a dog and a cat." Abu Dawud recorded this hadith in his Sunan. This hadith is sahih (authentic) according to the condition of Imam Muslim (may Allah have mercy on him), but it does not meet the conditions of Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him), since al-Bukhari does not use the narrations of Abu al-Zubayr or Abu Sufyan as evidence.
Perhaps Muslim did not record it in his Sahih because Waki' bin al-Jarrah narrated it from al-A'mash, saying: "Jabir bin Abdullah said", and then al-A'mash said: "I think Abu Sufyan mentioned it." So al-A'mash was in doubt about whether the hadith was connected, and for that reason the narration of Abu Sufyan became weak.
Some scholars have said that this applies when a cat has not been tamed, and some hold that this was at the beginning of Islam when the leftover of a cat was unlawful; then, when the leftover of a cat became lawful, taking its price also became lawful. There is no clear evidence for either of these two views.

Ata' (may Allah have mercy on him) said that there is no harm in taking the price of a cat. The Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When the sahih hadith is established and its abrogation is not known, there is no room for the statement of Ata'.
