Sa'id bin al-Musayyab (may Allah have mercy on him) said that he heard Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) say, while delivering a sermon on the pulpit: I bought dates by measure and would bring them to Madinah, carrying them myself along with servants; this was from a place near Madinah, at the market of Banu Qaynuqa'. I would take a profit of one or two sa'. I would measure out my profit, then pour out the remaining dates for them. This was mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)!" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Uthman! When you buy grain, measure it yourself, and when you sell, give it by measure."
