Allah, exalted be His praise, said: "O you who believe! Fear Allah and give up what remains of usury (riba), if you are believers. And if you do not do so, then take notice of war from Allah and His Messenger. But if you repent, you shall have your principal sums; you shall neither wrong nor be wronged." [Surah al-Baqarah: 278-279]

Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates about the Hajj of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his sermon at Arafah that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your blood and your wealth are sacred to you, just like the sanctity of this day of yours in this city of yours and in this month of yours. Beware! All the affairs of your era of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah) have been placed beneath these feet of mine. The blood-claims of the Jahiliyyah have also been abandoned, and the first blood I forgo is the blood of Rabi'ah bin al-Harith, whom Hudhayl killed while he was being nursed among Banu Sa'd. The usury (riba) of the Jahiliyyah has also been abandoned, and the first usury I forgo is the usury of Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him). It is abandoned entirely."

Sulayman bin Amr narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him): I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during the Farewell Hajj saying: "All the usury of the Jahiliyyah has been abandoned; you shall have your principal — you shall neither wrong nor be wronged [Surah al-Baqarah: 279]. Beware! All the blood-claims of the Jahiliyyah have been forgiven, and the first blood I forgive is the blood of al-Harith bin Abd al-Muttalib, who was being nursed among Banu Layth when Hudhayl killed him. O Allah, have I conveyed?" They said three times: Yes! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said three times: "O Allah, be witness." He said it three times.

Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said concerning the saying of Allah Almighty, "And give up what remains of usury (riba)" [Surah al-Baqarah: 278]: A man would have a debt owed to him by another man, and he would say to him: Give this much more, and pay it after such-and-such a time.

Zayd bin Aslam (may Allah have mercy on him) said: In the era of Ignorance, a man would have a debt owed to him by another man for a fixed term. When the term expired, the lender would say: Will you pay, or will you give usury? If he paid, he would take it; otherwise he would increase what was owed by him, and the other would extend the term.
