Nafi' narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that whoever sends off a sacrificial animal (hady), and it is then lost or dies: if it was from a vow, he must replace it; if it was a voluntary offering, he may replace it if he wishes, or otherwise leave it. This is authentic as a mawquf report (a statement of the Companion).

Nafi' narrates from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever sends off a voluntary sacrificial animal and it perishes, no replacement is due from him. If it was from a vow, a replacement is due from him." It has been narrated thus with this chain from al-Awza'i, and I consider it a mistake.
Others narrated it from al-Awza'i from Abdullah bin Amir al-Aslami, and it is characteristic of Abdullah bin Amir to raise mawquf reports (to the Prophet). And Allah knows best.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "Whoever sends off a voluntary sacrificial animal and it is lost, he may replace it if he wishes, or leave it if he wishes. If that sacrificial animal was from a vow, he must replace it."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Whoever sends off a voluntary sacrificial animal to Makkah and it then perishes, he may eat from it if he wishes, or leave it if he wishes. If that sacrificial animal was from a vow, he must replace it."
The correct version is the narration of the group from al-Awza'i, and then the authentic one is the narration of Malik from Nafi'. And Allah knows best.

Hadith Takhrij«منكر رواية القرقسائي عند الدارقطني 2/ 242»
In the narration of Ibn Abi al-Zinad (may Allah have mercy on him) it is: "When it is lost."
It has also been narrated with the first wording from Ibn Abi al-Zinad, from Musa bin Uqbah, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Ibn Umar in marfu' form (attributed to the Prophet), but its chain is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever sends off a voluntary sacrificial animal to Makkah (and) it perishes, the one taking it should not eat anything from it; if he eats of its meat, a replacement is due from him. Rather, he should slaughter it, dye its sandals (hung as a garland) in its blood and strike its side with them. If the sacrificial animal was obligatory, he may eat of its meat if he wishes, because making it up is necessary."
Abu Bakr bin Khuzaymah said: This hadith is mursal; between Abu al-Khalil and Abu Qatadah there is a (missing) man.

Hisham bin Urwah narrates from his father that two sacrificial camels of Sayyiduna Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) went missing. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) sent her two others, and she slaughtered them. After that, the missing camels were also found, so Sayyiduna Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) slaughtered them too.
