Al-A'mash said: I heard al-Hajjaj delivering a sermon on the pulpit, saying: Arrange the Qur'an as Jibril (peace be upon him) arranged it: the surah in which the cow is mentioned, the surah in which al-Nisa' (the women) is mentioned, the surah in which the family of Imran is mentioned. Then I met Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) and told him this, and he reviled him, then said: Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid informed me that he was with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) at Jamrat al-Aqabah. When he reached it, he stood in the middle of the valley and, facing it, threw seven small pebbles, saying the takbir with each pebble. I said: But people throw at it from above. He said: By the One besides whom there is no god, this is the standing place of the one upon whom Surah al-Baqarah was revealed.

Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid (may Allah have mercy on him) reports from his father that he said: "I departed from Jam' with Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he kept saying the Talbiyah until he stoned Jamrat al-Aqabah. He went into the middle of the valley and said: O my nephew, hand me seven stones. So he threw seven pebbles, saying the takbir with each pebble, until when he finished he said: O Allah, make this an accepted Hajj and forgive the sins. Then he said: I saw the one (peace and blessings be upon him) upon whom Surah al-Baqarah was revealed doing it just like this."

Abu Usamah said: I saw Salim bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) go down into the valley, then throw seven pebbles at the Jamrah, saying the takbir with each pebble: 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest), "O Allah, make it an accepted Hajj, forgive the sins, and appreciate the deeds." I asked him about what he had said, and he said: My father (may Allah be pleased with him) told me that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to stone the Jamrah from this very place, and every time he threw a pebble he would say the same as I have said.
