أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَخْتَوَيْهِ الْعَدْلُ، ثنا بِشْرُ بْنُ مُوسَى، ثنا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ مُوسَى، أَخْبَرَنِي نَبِيهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ، قَالَ: اشْتَكَى عُمَرُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَعْمَرٍ عَيْنَيْهِ بِمَلَلٍ وَهُوَ مُحْرِمٌ، فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى أَبَانَ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ يَسْأَلُهُ أِيُّ شَيْءٍ يُعَالِجُهُ؟ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبَانُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ: اضْمِدْهُمَا بِالصَّبِرِ، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ يُخْبِرُ بِذَلِكَ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " يُضَمِّدُهُمَا بِالصَّبِرِ "، رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ وَغَيْرِهِ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ.
Umar bin Ubaydullah bin Ma'mar suffered pain in his eyes at Malal while he was in ihram. So he sent a message to Aban bin Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) asking what treatment should be used. Aban (may Allah be pleased with him) told him: Apply a compress of aloes (sabir), for I heard Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) narrating from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He should apply a compress of aloes (sabir)."
وَأَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ، أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الصَّفَّارُ، ثنا زِيَادُ بْنُ الْخَلِيلِ التُّسْتَرِيُّ، ثنا مُسَدَّدٌ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ مُوسَى، عَنْ نَبِيهِ بْنِ وَهْبٍ أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَعْمَرٍ اشْتَكَى عَيْنَيْهِ وَهُوَ مُحْرِمٌ فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يُكَحِّلَهُمَا فَأَمَرَ أَبَانُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ أَنْ يُضَمِّدَهُمَا بِصَبِرٍ، وَزَعَمَ أَنَّ عُثْمَانَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ حَدَّثَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَفْعَلُهُ ".
Umar bin Ubaydullah bin Ma'mar's eyes became sore while he was in ihram, and he wanted to apply kohl. Aban bin Uthman (may Allah have mercy on him) instructed him to apply a compress of aloes (sabir), and he stated that Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that "he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do so."
وَرَوَاهُ عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَارِثِ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، ثنا أَيُّوبُ بْنُ مُوسَى، حَدَّثَنِي نَبِيهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَعْمَرٍ، رَمِدَتْ عَيْنُهُ فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يَكْحَلَهَا، فَنَهَاهُ أَبَانُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ وَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يُضَمِّدَهَا بِالصَّبِرِ وَحَدَّثَ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ أَخْبَرَنَاهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أنبأ أَبُو الْفَضْلِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، ثنا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، أنبأ عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَارِثِ فَذَكَرَهُ رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ.
Likewise (through another chain).
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ بِشْرَانَ الْعَدْلُ، بِبَغْدَادَ، أنبأ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الصَّفَّارُ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْكَرِيمِ بْنُ الْهَيْثَمِ، ثنا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ، أنبأ شُعَيْبٌ، قَالَ: قَالَ نَافِعٌ: كَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ: " لَا يَكْتَحِلُ الْمُحْرِمُ بِشَيْءٍ فِيهِ طِيبٌ وَلَا يَتَدَاوَى بِهِ ".
Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: The one in ihram should not apply kohl containing any perfume, nor treat himself with it.
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْقَاضِي، ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ الْأَصَمُّ، أنبأ الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، أنبأ الشَّافِعِيُّ، أنبأ سَعِيدُ بْنُ سَالِمٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ مُوسَى، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ إِذَا رَمِدَ وَهُوَ مُحْرِمٌ أَقْطَرَ فِي عَيْنَيْهِ الصَّبْرَ إِقْطَارًا، وَأَنَّهُ قَالَ: " يَكْتَحِلُ الْمُحْرِمُ بِأِيِّ كُحْلٍ إِذَا رَمِدَ مَا لَمْ يَكْتَحِلْ بِطِيبٍ، وَمِنْ غَيْرِ رَمَدٍ " ابْنُ عُمَرَ الْقَائِلُ.
Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had sore eyes while in the state of ihram, he would put a few drops of aloes (sabir) in his eyes, and he would say: The one in ihram may apply whatever kohl he wishes, as long as it is not scented.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو عَمْرِو بْنُ مَطَرٍ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالَ: وَجَدْتُ فِي كِتَابِي، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُعَاذٍ، ثنا أَبِي، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ شُمَيْسَةَ، قَالَتْ: ⦗١٠٠⦘ اشْتَكَتْ عَيْنِي وَأَنَا مُحَرَّمَةٌ فَسَأَلْتُ عَائِشَةَ أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَنِ الْكُحْلِ، فَقَالَتْ: " اكْتَحِلِي بِأِيِّ كُحْلٍ شِئْتِ غَيْرَ الْإِثْمَدِ " أَوْ قَالَتْ: " غَيْرَ كُلِّ كُحْلٍ أَسْوَدَ، أَمَا إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ بِحَرَامٍ، وَلَكِنَّهُ زِينَةٌ وَنَحْنُ نَكْرَهُهُ "، وَقَالَتْ: " إِنْ شِئْتِ كَحَّلْتُكِ بِصَبِرٍ " فَأَبَيْتُ.
Shumaysah (may Allah have mercy on her) said: My eyes became sore while I was in ihram, so I asked the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), about kohl. She said: Apply whatever kohl you wish other than ithmid, or she said: (other than) any black kohl. Indeed it is adornment; it is not forbidden, but we dislike it. And she said: If you wish, I will apply aloes (sabir) to your eyes. But I declined.
