Zirr bin Hubaysh (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: I asked Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) about Laylat al-Qadr, and he swore that it is the twenty-seventh night. I said: How do you say that, O Abu al-Mundhir? He said: Because of the signs and indications which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) described, for he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the morning of that day the sun rises without rays."

Zirr bin Hubaysh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I said to Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him): O Abu al-Mundhir, your brother Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says that whoever stands (in prayer) the whole year will attain Laylat al-Qadr. He said: 'Rahimahullah' (May Allah have mercy on him); he meant that people should not rely (on one night). He certainly knew that it is in Ramadan, and that it is the twenty-seventh night of its last ten. He said: We said: O Abu al-Mundhir, how do you recognise it? He said: By the signs which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) described: "On that day the sun rises without rays."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were discussing Laylat al-Qadr in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Which of you remembers when the moon rose and it was like half a platter?"
It has been said that this only happens on the twenty-third, and Allah knows best.

Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him about Laylat al-Qadr. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Which of you remembers the night of al-Sahbawat?" Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah, I remember it, O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be ransomed for you; there were some dates in my hand with which I was taking suhur, concealing myself from the dawn behind the back of a saddle, and that was when the moon rose.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, I am an old man and ill, and standing (in prayer) is hard for me; so command me (to observe) one night, perhaps Allah Almighty will grant me Laylat al-Qadr in it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hold to the seventh."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) called the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked them about Laylat al-Qadr, and they all agreed that it is in the last ten. I said to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): I think I know which night it is. He asked: Which night is it? I said: It is when seven have passed, or seven remain, of the last ten. He asked: How do you know? I said: Allah Almighty created seven heavens, seven earths and seven days, and time too revolves in sevens; man was created, and he eats and prostrates on seven limbs; the circuits (tawaf) are seven, and the mountains are seven. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You have grasped what we had not grasped.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: I was with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and his companions were with him. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked them: Concerning the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about Laylat al-Qadr, 'Seek it in the odd nights of the last ten', which night do you think it is? Some of them said: The first night; some said: The third night; some of them said: The fifth night; and some said: The seventh night. I was silent, so he said: Why are you silent and do not speak? I said: You told me not to speak until they had spoken. He said: I only sent for you so that you would speak. I said: I have heard Allah, Glorified and Exalted, mention seven: there are seven heavens and seven earths like them, man was created from seven things, and the produce of the earth is of seven kinds. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: What you have told me (so far) I know; but tell me what I do not know: your saying that the produce of the earth is seven, what are they? He said: Allah Almighty says: "Then We split the earth, splitting it, and caused to grow in it grain, and grapes and fodder, and olives and date-palms, and gardens dense with trees" [Surah Abasa: 26-30]. "Gardens dense with trees" means orchards of date-palms and trees; "and fruit and pasture (abb)" [Surah Abasa: 31]: "abb" is what the earth grows that animals and cattle eat but people do not eat. He said: Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said (to his companions): Were you unable to say what this boy has said, whose skull has not yet fully formed? By Allah, I too hold the view that he holds.
