Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) says that a man said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (while I was listening): "I wake up in the morning in a state of janabah (major ritual impurity) and I intend to fast." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I too wake up in the morning in a state of janabah and I intend to fast. I take a ritual bath (ghusl), then I fast that day." The man said: "You (peace and blessings be upon him) are not like us; your past sins have been forgiven, and the later ones too." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry and said: "By Allah, I hope that I am the most fearful of Allah among you, and the most knowledgeable of you about what taqwa (God-consciousness) is."

Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) says that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) seeking a ruling, and I was listening from behind the door. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, the prayer time comes upon me while I am in a state of janabah; may I fast?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The prayer comes upon me too while I am in a state of janabah, and I fast." He said: "You (peace and blessings be upon him) are not like us; Allah has forgiven your (peace and blessings be upon him) past sins and later ones." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah, I hope that I am the most fearful of Allah among you all, and that I know best what I should guard against."

Sayyidah Aishah and Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with them both), the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), say that if he (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up in the morning in a state of janabah from intercourse, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would fast. [Sahih. Recorded by Malik]

Ibn Bukayr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated a similar hadith, and added in its text: "that this would be in Ramadan, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would fast."

Abu Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman says that Marwan sent him to Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) to ask her about a man who wakes up in the morning in a state of janabah: should he fast? She said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would wake up in the morning in a state of janabah, and the janabah was from intercourse, not from a wet dream; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would neither break his fast nor make it up.

Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) says that dawn would come upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in Ramadan while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in a state of janabah, not from a wet dream; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would take a ritual bath and fast.

Abu Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman says: My father and I were with Marwan bin al-Hakam, who was the governor of Madinah, and it was mentioned to him that Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "Whoever wakes up in the morning in a state of janabah, let him break his fast that day." Marwan said: "O Abd al-Rahman, I adjure you to go to the Mother of the Believers Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and the Mother of the Believers Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) and ask them both about this." Abu Bakr says: So Abd al-Rahman went, and I was with him, until we came to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). Abd al-Rahman greeted her with salam and said: "O Mother of the Believers, we were with Marwan and the whole matter was mentioned, that Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'Whoever wakes up in the morning in a state of janabah, let him break his fast that day.'" Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "It is not as Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said. O Abd al-Rahman, do you turn away from what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do?" Abd al-Rahman said: "No, by Allah, that is not the case." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "I bear witness that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would wake up in the morning in a state of janabah from intercourse, not from a wet dream, and then fast that day." Then we left and went to Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) and asked her, and she said the same as Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) had said. Then we came to Marwan, and Abd al-Rahman told him what the two of them had said. Marwan said: "O Abu Muhammad, I adjure you to ride my mount that is at the door, go to Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) and inform him of this." So Abd al-Rahman rode and I rode too, and we came to Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). Abd al-Rahman talked with him for a while, then mentioned this matter to Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I have no knowledge of this; an informant told me."

Abu Bakr says: I heard Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) saying in his sermons: Whoever wakes up in the morning in a state of janabah should not fast. I mentioned this to Abd al-Rahman, and he rejected it. Then Abd al-Rahman and I went to Sayyidah Aishah and Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with them both), and Abd al-Rahman asked them about this, and both of them said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would wake up in the morning in a state of janabah from intercourse, not from a wet dream, and then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would fast. Then we came to Marwan, and Abd al-Rahman told him the whole matter. Marwan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I urge you strongly to go to Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) and refute what he says. He says: Then we came to Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), and Abu Bakr was with us throughout the whole matter. Abd al-Rahman stated this before Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), and Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard this from al-Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him); I did not hear it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). So Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) retracted what he used to say. I said to Abd al-Malik: Did the two of them mention Ramadan? He said: Like that; he (peace and blessings be upon him) would wake up in the morning in a state of janabah, not from a wet dream, and then fast.

Qatadah narrates from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) retracted this statement of his before his death.

Umar bin Qays al-Makki (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Ata' (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) made a very fine retraction concerning the person in a state of janabah who wakes up in the morning in that state without having taken a ritual bath.
Abu Bakr bin al-Mundhir (may Allah have mercy on him) says: The best thing I have heard on this matter is that it is understood as abrogation. In the early days of Islam, intercourse was forbidden after sleeping, just like eating and drinking. Then, when Allah Almighty permitted intercourse until the break of dawn, it also became permissible for the person in a state of janabah to fast that day before taking the ritual bath, because the prohibition had been lifted. Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to give rulings according to what he had heard from al-Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), and he did not know of the abrogation; then, when he heard the hadith of Aishah and Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with them both), he turned to it.
