Khalid bin Aslam said: We went out with Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and while we were walking a Bedouin caught up with us and said: Are you Abdullah bin Umar? He said: Yes. The Bedouin said: I asked about you and was directed to you. Tell me: does the paternal aunt inherit? Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I do not know. He said: You are Ibn Umar and you do not know this? Another time he said: You do not know, and we do not know. Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Yes; go to the scholars of Madinah and ask them. When he turned away, Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) kissed his own hands and said: How well Abu Abd al-Rahman spoke! He was asked about what he did not know, and he said: I do not know. Then the Bedouin said: Allah Almighty says: "And those who hoard gold and silver" [Surah al-Tawbah: 34]. Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Whoever hoarded them and did not pay their zakah, woe to him. This was only before the command of zakah was revealed; when zakah was revealed, Allah Almighty made it a means of purifying wealth. Then he looked towards me and said: I would not mind if I had gold equal to (Mount) Uhud, knowing its amount, paying its zakah and dealing with it in obedience to the command of Allah.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: All wealth whose zakah is paid, even if it is beneath the seven earths, is not "kanz" (hoarded treasure); and all wealth whose zakah is not paid is "kanz" (hoarded treasure), even if it lies on the surface of the earth.
This is the correct version, mawquf (the Companion's own words); Suwayd bin Abd al-Aziz, who is not strong, narrated it as marfu' (attributed to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)).

Abdullah bin Dinar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I heard Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) when he was asked about "al-kanz" (hoarded treasure), and he said: It is the wealth whose zakah is not paid.
This is the correct version, mawquf (the Companion's own words).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "All wealth whose zakah is paid is not kanz, even if it is buried in the ground; and all wealth whose zakah is not paid is kanz, even if it lies in the open."
This is not mahfuz (preserved); what is well known is from Sufyan, from Ubaydullah, from Nafi', from Ibn Umar, as mawquf (his own words).

Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that she used to wear gold anklets. I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about that: "Is this kanz (hoarded treasure)?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you pay its zakah, then it is not kanz."

Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: When this verse was revealed: "And those who hoard gold and silver" [Surah al-Tawbah: 34], it weighed heavily upon the Muslims. They said: None of us is able to leave any wealth for his child that would remain after him. So Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will resolve this difficulty for you. Then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) both came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Prophet of Allah! This verse has weighed heavily upon your Companions. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty has made zakah obligatory only to purify by it what remains of your wealth, and He has appointed inheritance in your wealth that remains after you." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) then proclaimed the takbir. Then (the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) said: "Shall I not tell you of the best treasure that a man can store up? It is a righteous wife: when you look at her she pleases you, when you command her she obeys, and when he is absent she guards his wealth and honour."
