Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said that people passed by him (peace and blessings be upon him) with a funeral and praised the deceased well, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wajabat (It has become due)." Then another funeral passed and its evil was mentioned, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wajabat (It has become due)." Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, what has become due? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one whose good you mentioned, Paradise has become due for him; and the one whose evil you mentioned, the Fire has become due for him. And you are the witnesses of Allah on earth."

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said that a funeral passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Praise him." They said: As far as we know, he loved Allah and His Messenger; that is, they praised him well. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It has become due." Then another funeral passed by him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Speak about him." The people spoke ill of him, saying that he was not good in the religion of Allah. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It has become due for him, and you are the witnesses of Allah on earth."

Then another funeral passed and its good was mentioned, so Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "It has become due." Then a third funeral passed and its evil was mentioned, so Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "It has become due." Abu al-Aswad said: I said: O Commander of the Believers, what has become due? He said: I said just as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Any Muslim for whom four people testify to his goodness (righteousness), Allah Almighty will admit him to Paradise." We said: And if there are three? He said: "Three as well." We said: And two? He said: "Two as well." Then we did not ask him about one.
