Hani (may Allah have mercy on him), the freed slave of Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), says that whenever Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) stood at a grave, he would weep so much that his blessed beard became wet. It was said to him: Paradise and Hell are mentioned before you and you do not weep, so why do you weep at the mention of the grave? He would say: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The grave is the first of the stages of the Hereafter. Whoever is saved from it, the stages after it will be easier for him; and whoever is not saved from it, the stages after it will be much harder."

Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) said to his son Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him): When I die, do not let any wailing woman accompany me, nor any fire. When you bury me, pour the earth over me. When you have finished with my grave, remain around my grave for as long as it takes to slaughter a camel and distribute its meat, for I will take comfort in your company until I know what answer I will give to the messengers of my Lord.
