Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hasten with the funeral. If it is righteous, then it is good to which you are taking it; and if it is otherwise, then it is an evil that you are putting down from your necks."

Abd al-Rahman bin Mihran narrates that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) left instructions at the time of his death: Do not pitch a tent over my grave, do not follow me with fire, and take me quickly. For I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When the believer is placed on his bier, he says: 'Take me forward, take me forward.' And when the disbeliever is placed on the bier, he says: 'Woe is me! Where are you taking me?'"

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the funeral (bier) is set down and men carry it on their necks, if it is righteous it says: 'Take me forward, take me forward.' If it is not righteous, the deceased says: 'Woe is me! Where are you taking me?' Everything hears its voice except man; and if man heard it, he would perish."

The son of Abd al-Rahman narrates from his father, who said: I was at the funeral of Abd al-Rahman bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him), when Ziyad and some men from among his freed slaves began walking backwards in front of the bier, saying: "Slowly, slowly, may Allah bless you." He said: Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) caught up with them in one of the lanes of al-Mirbad; he drove his mule at them, lashed at them with his whip and said: "Make way! By the One who honoured the face of Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him), we used to see ourselves in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) almost running with it (the funeral)."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the pace of walking with the funeral, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The pace is less than a trot. If it is good, it is hastened towards it; and if it is otherwise, then away with the people of the Fire. The funeral is followed, it does not follow; whoever goes ahead of it is not with it."
