أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَمْرٍو الْأَدِيبُ، أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْإِسْمَاعِيلِيُّ، أنبأ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ، ثنا حَرْمَلَةُ، أنبأ ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، أنبأ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، أَنَّ أَيُّوبَ بْنَ أَبِي تَمِيمَةَ أَخْبَرَهُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ سِيرِينَ، يَقُولُ: حَدَّثَتْنَا أُمُّ عَطِيَّةَ، قَالَتْ: دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى الله عَلَيهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَنَحْنُ نُغَسِّلُ ابْنَتَهُ، فَقَالَ: " اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا، فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي "، فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا أَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ، فَقَالَ: " أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ " قَالَ: وَلَمْ يَزِدْ عَلَى ذَلِكَ، قَالَ: فَلَا أَدْرِي أِيَّ بَنَاتِهِ وَزَعَمَ أَنَّ الْإِشْعَارَ: الْفِفْنَهَا فِيهِ، قَالَ: وَكَذَلِكَ كَانَ ابْنُ سِيرِينَ: يَأْمُرُ بِالْمَرْأَةِ أَنْ تُشْعَرَ لِفَافَةً وَلَا تُؤْزَرَ رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ عَنِ ابْنِ وَهْبٍ.
Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Sayyidah Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated to us; she said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us while we were washing his daughter, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wash her three or five times, or more than that if you see the need, with water and lote leaves, and at the end put camphor." When we had finished with that, he (peace and blessings be upon him) threw his waist-wrapper to us and said: "Shroud her in it."

وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو صَالِحِ بْنُ أَبِي طَاهِرٍ، أنبأ جَدِّي يَحْيَى بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ بِشْرٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أنبأ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَيُّوبُ السَّخْتِيَانِيُّ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ ابْنَ سِيرِينَ، يَقُولُ: كَانَتِ امْرَأَةٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ يُقَالُ لَهَا: أُمُّ عَطِيَّةَ مِنَ اللَّوَاتِي بَايَعْنَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى الله عَلَيهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدِمَتِ الْبَصْرَةَ تُبَادِرُ ابْنًا لَهَا فَلَمْ تُدْرِكْهُ، فَحَدَّثَتْنَا وَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ بِنَحْوِهِ. قَالَ: قُلْتُ: مَا قَوْلُهُ: " أَشْعِرْنَهَا اتَّزِرْنَ بِهِ؟ قَالَ: لَا أَرَاهُ إِلَّا أَنْ يَقُولَ: الْفِفْنَهَا فِيهِ، قَالَ أَيُّوبُ: وَكَذَلِكَ كَانَ ابْنُ سِيرِينَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْمَرْأَةِ أَنْ تُشْعَرَ لِفَافَةً.
Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Among the women Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) who gave the pledge of allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her). She came to Basra looking for a son of hers but could not find him. He says: I asked about the words 'ash'irnaha' (put it on her as an inner garment): does it mean she is to be girded with it at the waist? He said: No, it means that we wrap her in it.
Ayyub (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) also used to order concerning a woman that she be wrapped in an inner wrapping.

وَقَالَ: ابْنُ زَنْجُوَيْهِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَيُّوبَ: مَا ⦗١٠⦘ قَوْلُهُ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ أَتُؤَازَرُ بِهِ، قَالَ: " لَا أَظُنُّ، كَانَ ابْنُ سِيرِينَ يَقُولُ تُلَفُّ بِثَوْبٍ تَحْتَ الدِّرْعِ وَلَا أَرَاهُ إِلَّا ذَلِكَ " أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَمْرٍو الْأَدِيبُ، أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْإِسْمَاعِيلِيُّ، أَخْبَرَنِي الْمَنِيعِيُّ، ثنا ابْنُ زَنْجُوَيْهِ، فَذَكَرَهُ.
Ibn Jurayj (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I asked Ayyub (may Allah have mercy on him): What do the words 'ash'irnaha iyyahu' mean; is she to be girded with it as a waist-wrapper? He said: I do not think so. Ibn Sirin used to say: "She is wrapped in a cloth beneath the shift (dir')", and I think it means only that.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الصَّغَانِيُّ، ثنا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، ثنا أَبِي، عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، حَدَّثَنِي نُوحُ بْنُ حَكِيمٍ الثَّقَفِيُّ، وَكَانَ قَارِئًا لِلْقُرْآنِ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ بَنِي عُرْوَةَ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ دَاوُدُ قَدْ وَلَدَتْهُ أُمُّ حَبِيبَةَ بِنْتُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ زَوْجُ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى الله عَلَيهِ وَسَلَّمَ، عَنْ لَيْلَى بِنْتِ قَانِفٍ الثَّقَفِيَّةِ، قَالَتْ: " كُنْتُ فِي مَنْ غَسَّلَ أُمَّ كُلْثُومِ بِنْتَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيهِ وَسَلَّمَ عِنْدَ وَفَاتِهَا، فَكَانَ أَوَّلُ مَا أَعْطَانَا الْحِقَاءَ، ثُمَّ الدِّرْعَ، ثُمَّ الْخِمَارَ، ثُمَّ الْمِلْحَفَةَ، ثُمَّ أُدْرِجَتْ بَعْدُ فِي الثَّوْبِ الْآخِرِ "، قَالَتْ: " وَرَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَالِسٌ عِنْدَ الْبَابِ مُعِدٌّ كَفَنَهَا يُنَاوِلُنَاهُ ثَوْبًا ثَوْبًا ".
Layla bint Qanif al-Thaqafiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I was among those who washed Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when she died. The first thing he gave us was the waist-wrapper, then the shift, then the head-covering, then the wrapping sheet, and after that she was wrapped in the final cloth. She says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting by the door with her shroud ready, handing it to us one garment at a time.
