Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever attends a funeral until the funeral prayer is offered over it will have one qirat (of reward), and whoever attends it until it is buried will have two qirats." It was asked: What are the two qirats? He said: "Like two great mountains."
Salim bin Abdullah bin Umar narrates that Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to pray over a funeral and then leave; but when the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reached him, he said: "We have lost many qirats."

Amir bin Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that he was sitting with Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) when Khabbab, the keeper of the maqsurah, appeared and said: O Abdullah bin Umar, do you not hear what Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says? He heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever goes out with a funeral from its house, prays over it and then follows it until it is buried, will have two qirats of reward; and whoever prays over it and then returns will have one qirat of reward, like Uhud." So Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) sent Khabbab to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) to ask her about what Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) had said and then come back and tell him what she said. Meanwhile Ibn Umar took a handful of the pebbles of the mosque and kept turning them over in his hand until the messenger returned to him. He said: Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Abu Hurayrah has spoken the truth. Then Ibn Umar struck the ground with the pebbles that were in his hand and said: "We have fallen short in many qirats."
Most of the narrations from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) refer to the completion of the burial.
