Ubayd bin Umayr (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said during the Farewell Pilgrimage: "Behold! The friends of Allah are those who pray: those who establish the five prayers that have been made obligatory upon them, who fast Ramadan seeking reward, considering it an obligation upon them, who give the zakah of their wealth hoping for reward, and who avoid the major sins that Allah Almighty has forbidden." Then a man asked: O Messenger of Allah! What are the major sins? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are nine (9): associating partners with Allah Almighty, killing a believer without right, fleeing from the battlefield, consuming the wealth of an orphan, consuming usury (riba), slandering a chaste woman, disobeying Muslim parents, and violating the sanctity of the Sacred House, which is the qiblah of your living and your dead." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No man dies who has not committed these major sins, and who establishes the prayer and gives the zakah, except that he will be with his Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in an abode whose doors have panels of gold."

Taysalah bin Ali said: I asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) on the day of Arafah, while he was at the foot of an arak tree pouring water over his head and face. I said to him: May Allah have mercy on you, tell me about the major sins. He said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The major sins are associating partners with Allah and slandering a chaste woman." I said: Is killing (also a major sin)? He said: "Yes, even if you dislike it; and killing a believing soul, fleeing from the battlefield, consuming the wealth of an orphan, disobeying Muslim parents, and violating the sanctity of the Sacred House, which is the qiblah of your living and your dead."
