Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from his father that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked about al-Bara' bin Ma'rur (may Allah be pleased with him). They said: O Messenger of Allah, he has died; he bequeathed a third of his wealth to you, and he also instructed that when death came to him his face should be turned towards the Qiblah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He has attained the fitrah (natural way), and I have returned his third to his children." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) went and offered the funeral prayer over him and said: 'Allahumma ighfir lahu warhamhu wa adkhilhu jannataka, wa qad fa'alta' (O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him and admit him into Your Paradise, and indeed You have done so).

Abd al-Rahman bin Abdullah bin Ka'b bin Malik narrates in this story that al-Bara' bin Ma'rur (may Allah be pleased with him) was the first person to face the Qiblah both when alive and when dead.
This is a good (jayyid) mursal report.
Al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned the Ka'bah and said: By Allah, these are only stones which Allah Almighty has set up as our Qiblah for our living, and we turn our dead towards it as well.
