Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered upon Umm al-Sa'ib or Umm al-Musayyib (may Allah be pleased with her) while she was shivering. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is the matter with you, O Umm al-Sa'ib (or Umm al-Musayyib)?" She said: "It is the fever, may Allah not bless it." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not curse the fever, for it removes the sins of the children of Adam just as the furnace removes the impurities of iron."

Qays bin Abi Hazim narrates: We came to visit Sayyiduna Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him), and he had cauterised his body with iron. He said: "The Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (may Allah be pleased with them) accepted Islam and passed away, and wealth did not diminish anything of their deeds; but we have acquired wealth for which we find no place to spend except the earth." Then we came to him a second time to visit him, and he was building a wall. He said: "The Muslim is rewarded for everything he spends, except for what he puts into the earth. And had the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) not forbidden us to pray for death, I would certainly have prayed for it."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "No one's deeds will ever admit him into Paradise." They said: "Not even you, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Not even me, unless Allah Almighty covers me with His mercy and grace. So keep to what is right and stay close to it, and let none of you wish for death. If he is a doer of good, perhaps his good will increase; and if he is a sinner, perhaps he will repent."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let none of you wish for death because of some harm that has befallen him. If he must do so, then let him say: 'Allahumma ahyini ma kanat al-hayatu khayran li, wa tawaffani idha kanat al-wafatu khayran li' (O Allah, keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and cause me to die when death is better for me)."
