Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) set out for Syria (Sham). When he reached Sargh, news reached him that an epidemic had broken out in Syria, and Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) informed him that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you hear of it in a land, do not go there; and when the epidemic breaks out in a place where you are present, do not leave it with the intention of fleeing from it." So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) turned back from Sargh. Ibn Shihab narrates from Salim bin Abdullah, who narrates from his father (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both), that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) turned back with the people because of the hadith of Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him).

Ibrahim bin Sa'd said: I heard Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrating to Sa'd from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: "When you hear that the plague has spread in a land, do not enter it; and when the plague spreads in a land where you are already present, do not leave it." I said: "Did you hear him narrate this to Sa'd and he did not deny it?" He said: "Yes."

It is narrated from the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), that she asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about the plague, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed it is a punishment that Allah Almighty sends down upon whomever He wills, but He has made it a mercy for the people of faith. There is no servant who stays in the land where the plague has broken out, remaining there only out of faith and in hope of reward, knowing that nothing will ever befall him except what Allah Almighty has written for him, except that he will have a reward equal to the reward of a martyr."
