Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah; through them Allah, the Lord of Might, frightens His servants. They do not lose their light because of anyone's death or life. When you see anything of this, then pray and supplicate until they become bright again."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The sun and the moon do not lose their light because of anyone's death or life; rather, both of them are among the signs of Allah. When you see them in this state, then pray."

Al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the sun was eclipsed in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) led a prayer of two rak'ahs, then said: "The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah; they are not eclipsed because of anyone's death or life. When they are eclipsed, then pray, supplicate and remember Allah."

Al-Hasan narrates from Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the moon was eclipsed while Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) was in Basrah. He led us in a prayer of two rak'ahs, bowing twice in each rak'ah. Then he mounted his riding animal and addressed us, saying: I prayed just as I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praying. And he said: "The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah. They do not lose their light because of anyone's death or life. When you see either of them eclipsed, then turn to Allah for help."
