(a) Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed in Madinah for nine years without performing Hajj. Then he announced the Hajj to the people. Then he mentioned the hadith describing the Hajj of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He says: Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) went out towards al-Safa and said: "We begin where Allah began," and recited: "Indeed, al-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah." [Surah al-Baqarah: 158] Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) climbed al-Safa until the House came into view, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said takbir three times and said: 'La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, yuhyi wa yumit, biyadihil-khayr, wa huwa ala kulli shay'in qadir' (There is no god but Allah alone, He has no partner; His is the dominion and His is the praise; He gives life and causes death; in His hand is all good, and He has power over all things). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would supplicate there. Then he came down and walked until he reached the bottom of the valley; then he ran until his feet began to climb out of the valley. Then he walked to al-Marwah and climbed it until the House came into view before him; then he said takbir three times and said: 'La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah' (There is no god but Allah alone, He has no partner), just as he had done on al-Safa. Then he came down.
(b) In the hadith of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted his camel to set out on a journey, he would say takbir three times.
(c) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when he (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from a military expedition, Hajj or Umrah, he would say takbir three times on every elevated place.

Ikrimah narrates from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he used to say takbir from the morning of Arafah until the last of the days of Tashriq, but not at Maghrib: 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, wa lillahil-hamd, Allahu akbar wa ajall, Allahu akbar ala ma hadana' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and to Allah belongs all praise; Allah is the Greatest and Most Majestic; Allah is the Greatest for what He has guided us to).

Yunus (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding the takbir of the days of Tashriq that he said: 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest); and Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) says that he used to say the takbir three times.

Abu Uthman al-Nahdi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) used to teach us the takbirs. He would say: Say takbir: 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbaru kabira' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, most great). Then he would say: 'Allahumma anta a'la wa ajallu min an takuna laka sahibah, aw yakuna laka walad, aw yakuna laka sharikun fil-mulk, aw yakuna laka waliyyun minadh-dhull, wa kabbirhu takbira. Allahummaghfir lana, Allahummarhamna'
(O Allah, You are too exalted to have a consort, or a child, or a partner in the dominion, or a protector out of weakness; and magnify Him with all magnificence. O Allah, forgive us; O Allah, have mercy on us). Then he would say: This shall be written; these two shall not be left out, rather they shall be made a pair.
