Yahya bin Yahya (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I read before Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him), through Muhammad bin Abi Bakr al-Thaqafi, that he asked Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), while the two of them were going from Mina to Arafah: What did you use to do on these days with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: The one reciting the talbiyah would recite the talbiyah and no objection was made to him, and those among us saying takbir would say takbir and no objection was made to them either.

Abdullah narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the morning of Arafah. Some of us were saying takbir and some talbiyah, but we were saying takbir. The narrator says: I said: By Allah, it is amazing of you; why did you not ask him: What did you see the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) doing?

(a) Ubayd bin Umayr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say takbir from after Fajr on the day of Arafah until the Zuhr prayer on the last of the days of Tashriq.
This is how al-Hajjaj bin Artah narrated it from Ata, and Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan rejected it, saying: This is an error (wahm) on the part of al-Hajjaj.
(b) The chain from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) is only that he used to say takbir in his tent at Mina.
(c) Ata bin Abi Rabah (may Allah have mercy on him) used to say takbir from the Zuhr prayer on the Day of Sacrifice until the Asr prayer on the last of the days of Tashriq. Had Ata had from Umar what al-Hajjaj narrated from him, he would not have allowed himself to differ from Umar; and Allah knows best.
It has also been narrated from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i that he reported it from Umar and Ali, and it is mursal.

But the students of Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) would say it until the Asr prayer on the Day of Sacrifice, while Sayyiduna Umar and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) held that the takbirs continue until the Asr prayer on the last of the days of Tashriq.
