Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that he was present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Eid. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the prayer before the sermon without adhan or iqamah. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood leaning on Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) and delivered the sermon to the people; he praised and glorified Allah and exhorted and admonished them. Likewise, still leaning on Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the women, exhorted and admonished them, and said: "Give charity, for the majority of you are fuel for Hell." A woman of low standing with darkened cheeks stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Why? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You complain a great deal and are ungrateful to your husbands." The women began taking off their rings, necklaces and earrings and were giving them to Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) as charity.

Abd al-Malik bin Abi Sulayman narrates a similar hadith, but in it are these words: he (peace and blessings be upon him) was leaning on Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him); he (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded mindfulness of Allah (taqwa), urged obedience, and exhorted and admonished the people; then he came to the women. At the end of this hadith it is that the women were putting their jewellery, earrings and rings into the cloth of Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him).
