Abdullah bin al-Samit says that Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) went to al-Rabadhah, and at the watering place there was an Abyssinian slave. When the iqamah for the prayer was called, Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked to lead the prayer, and the slave stepped back. Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Step forward, for my dear friend (peace and blessings be upon him) enjoined me "to listen and obey, even if the leader is an Abyssinian slave with cut ears."

Ubaydullah bin Adi bin al-Khiyar (may Allah have mercy on him) says that he went to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was besieged in his house, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was leading the people in prayer. I said: "O Commander of the Believers, I feel uneasy about praying with these people while you are besieged, and you are the imam. What is your view about praying with them?" Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Prayer is the best thing people do; when they do good, do good along with them, and when they do evil, keep away from their evil."

Abdul Aziz bin Abdul Malik narrates from his father, who said: I was sitting with Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) near the pulpit on Friday. Muhammad bin Abi Hudhayfah came out and took his place on the pulpit, addressed the people with a sermon and recited a surah of the Qur'an to them; he was among the best reciters of the Qur'an among the people. Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke the truth, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "People will recite the Qur'an, but it will not go beyond their throats, and they will pass out of the religion just as an arrow passes through the game." Ibn Abi Hudhayfah heard this and said: By Allah, if you are truthful, and as far as I know you are a great liar, then you are surely one of them.
Abdullah bin al-Mubarak (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This hadith is understood to mean that they used to pray the Friday prayer with them and say these words to them.
