Sayyiduna Umarah bin Ruwaybah (may Allah be pleased with him) saw Bishr bin Marwan raising his hands, and said: May Allah disfigure these two hands! I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); he did no more than this, and he pointed with his index finger.

Sayyiduna Umarah bin Ruwaybah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that he saw Bishr bin Marwan on the pulpit on Friday raising his hands in supplication, and said: Look at him! And he reviled him. Then he said: I have seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); he did no more than this, and he pointed with his index finger.

(a) Ibn Abi Dhubab narrates from Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him): I never saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) raise his hands while supplicating, neither on the pulpit nor elsewhere; rather, I saw him (peace and blessings be upon him) do like this, and he pointed with the index finger and joined the middle finger with the thumb in a ring.
(b) The purpose of both hadiths is to establish supplication in the sermon, and it is sunnah, while supplicating during the sermon, to point with the finger and not raise the hands.
(c) It is established from Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he stretched out his hands and supplicated, and that was when he prayed for rain in the Friday sermon.
