Abu Ubaydah narrates from Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he entered the mosque while Abdur Rahman bin al-Hakam was delivering the sermon sitting down. He said: Look at this wicked man, delivering the sermon sitting down, whereas Allah Almighty says: "And when they saw a trade caravan or some amusement, they dispersed towards it and left you standing." [Surah al-Jumu'ah: 11]

Salim bin Abi al-Ja'd narrates from Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver the sermon standing on Friday. A caravan came from Syria, and the people went off towards it until only 12 men remained with him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then this verse was revealed: "And when they see a trade caravan or some amusement, they turn off towards it and leave you standing." [Surah al-Jumu'ah: 11]

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver the Friday sermon standing, then sit, then stand and deliver the (second) sermon. Whoever tells you that he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver the sermon sitting is lying. By Allah, I have prayed more than two thousand prayers with him (peace and blessings be upon him).
