Salim bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was delivering the sermon on a Friday when one of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with him) entered. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) called out to him: What time is this? He replied: I was busy today and could not get home; when I heard the call to prayer, there was time only for ablution. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: And only ablution as well! Yet you know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) "used to command the ritual bath (ghusl)."
Note: The Companion who came into the mosque was Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him).

Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that two men from Iraq came and asked whether the Friday ghusl was obligatory. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Taking a bath is purer and better. But I will tell you how the ghusl began: in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the people were poor and wore woollen clothing. They would water the date palms, carrying the water on their backs, and the mosque was narrow with a low roof. Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out on a Friday in intense heat. His (peace and blessings be upon him) pulpit was also small, having only three steps. He (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered the sermon to the people, and from sweating in their woollen clothes a smell of wool and sweat arose, which caused the people discomfort, and the smell reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as well. While he (peace and blessings be upon him) was on the pulpit, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people! When it is this day, take a bath, and put on whatever perfume and oil you have at home."

Amrah narrates from Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the people did their own labour, and they would then come to the Friday prayer in that same state. It would be said to them: "If only you had taken a bath, it would have been better."

Urwah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that people used to come to the Friday prayer from their homes and from the outlying settlements. They would come through the dust, and their sweat would give off a bad smell. One of them came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and he smelled bad. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If only you would bathe for this day of yours."

Ahmad bin Isa (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated the hadith, and in it there is: They would come through the dust, and dust and sweat would get on them. Some of them came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was with me.

Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever performs ablution on Friday, that will suffice him, and it is good; but whoever takes a bath, then that is better."
