Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was the best of all people in character. When the time of prayer came while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in our house, he would order the mat that was beneath him (peace and blessings be upon him) to be laid out; it would be swept and sprinkled with water. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would stand, and we would stand behind him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would lead us in prayer. That mat was made of palm branches.

He (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing only a single garment which he (peace and blessings be upon him) had wrapped around himself, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited (Surah) wal-Mursalat [Surah al-Mursalat: 1]. After that he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not lead any prayer until he passed away.

Abu Sa'id, a slave of the Ansar, invited Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). When the time of prayer came, Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) stepped forward to lead them in prayer, whereupon Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "O Abu Dharr! Step back." Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Ibn Mas'ud! O Abu Abd al-Rahman! Is it so?" He said: "Yes." So Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) stepped back.
