Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to sleep in the Mosque of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was an unmarried young man.

Sayyiduna Talhah al-Nasri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I came to Madinah as an emigrant. Whenever a man came to Madinah as an emigrant, if there was someone he knew, he would stay with him, and if not, he would stay with the people of the Suffah. When I came, I had no acquaintance either, so I stayed with the people of the Suffah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pair men off two by two as companions and divide a mudd of dates between them. One day, while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in prayer, a man suddenly called out: O Messenger of Allah, the dates have burned our stomachs and our woollen cloaks have torn away from us. The narrator said: He (peace and blessings be upon him), after praising and glorifying Allah Almighty, mentioned the hardship he (peace and blessings be upon him) had faced from his people, then said: "My companion and I stayed for more than ten nights with no food except the fruit of the arak tree, until we came to our brothers of the Ansar. They helped us with their food, and most of their food was dates. By Allah, besides whom there is no god, if I had the means to feed you bread and meat, I would certainly feed it to you. Soon a time will come upon you, or whoever of you lives to see it (will see that) you will wear clothes like the coverings of the Ka'bah, and large bowls of food will be brought to you morning and evening." They asked: O Messenger of Allah, are we better today, or will we be better on that day? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are better today, for you are brothers, and on that day you will strike one another's necks."

Uthman bin al-Yaman said: When the Muhajirun in Madinah became numerous and they had no house or shelter, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) lodged them in the mosque and named them "the People of the Suffah." He (peace and blessings be upon him) would sit with them and talk with them affectionately.
(b) It is reported from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) that he was asked about sleeping in the mosque, and he said: Where did the People of the Suffah sleep? Meaning that they too slept in the mosque.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I swear by Allah, the Lord of Might, the only one worthy of worship, I used to press my stomach against the ground out of hunger, and I used to tie a stone to my stomach out of hunger. One day I sat on the path where people commonly passed, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by me. I asked him about a verse of the Book of Allah. I asked him only so that he would take me along with him, but he did not grasp what I meant and went on. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by, and I asked him the same, my only aim being that he would take me along with him, but he too went on without grasping what I meant. At last Abu al-Qasim (the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) passed that way. He (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled when he saw me and recognised the state of my heart and my face. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) called me: "O Abu Hurayrah!" I said: "Here I am, O Messenger of Allah." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Come along!" So I kept following behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) until he (peace and blessings be upon him) entered his house; I asked permission and then I too entered his (peace and blessings be upon him) house. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw milk there in a cup and asked: "Where has this milk come from?" They replied: "So-and-so, or such-and-such a woman, sent it to you (peace and blessings be upon him) as a gift." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me to call the People of the Suffah. The People of the Suffah were the guests of Islam; they had no family or wealth to turn to. Whenever charity came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) would send it to them without taking anything from it, and whenever a gift came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) would share it with them too, and now also he (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to share the milk with them. This displeased me. I thought: What is this milk compared to the People of the Suffah? I had hoped that I would get this milk so that I could relieve my hunger, and I was the messenger as well; he (peace and blessings be upon him) had ordered me to bring them, and I had no hope of getting any milk, but obedience to Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was also necessary. I went to them and called them. They asked permission; he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave them permission, and they sat down in the house. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Hurayrah!" I said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah!" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take this cup and give them milk to drink." I took the cup; I would give it to one man, and after drinking his fill he would return the cup. Then I would give it to another, and he too would drink his fill and return the cup, until I reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and all the people had drunk their fill of milk. He (peace and blessings be upon him) took the cup, looked at me and smiled, and said: "O Abu Hurayrah!" I said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah!" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Now only you and I remain." I said: "You (peace and blessings be upon him) have spoken the truth." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Drink!" So I drank. Then he said: "Drink more!" And a third time he (peace and blessings be upon him) said again: "Drink!" and I drank. He (peace and blessings be upon him) kept repeating these words, until I said: "By Allah! Now I find no room for it at all." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Give it to me." I gave the cup to him (peace and blessings be upon him); he (peace and blessings be upon him) praised Allah and, after saying 'Bismillah' (in the name of Allah), drank the remaining milk.

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man from the family of Marwan was appointed governor over Madinah. He summoned Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) and ordered him to revile Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) refused, so he said: If you will not revile him, then at least say: May Allah curse Abu Turab. Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The name "Abu Turab" was dearer to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) than all other names, and he would feel great joy when he was called by it. He was asked: Tell us why he was named "Abu Turab." He said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the house of Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was not there. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Fatimah, where is your cousin (Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him)?" She said: Something happened between him and me, so he left angry and did not come back. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to someone: "See where he is." The man came back and replied: O Messenger of Allah, he is sleeping in the mosque. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the mosque, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was lying down; his cloak had slipped off his side and dust had got on him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was wiping the dust off him and saying: "Qum Aba Turab, qum Aba Turab" (Get up, O Abu Turab! Get up, O Abu Turab!).

Al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked about the ruling on taking a midday nap in the mosque. He said: I saw Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), when he was the Caliph, taking his midday nap in the mosque. When he got up, the marks of the pebbles would be on his side, and he would say: This is the Commander of the Faithful.
(b) The narrator Yunus moved his finger, and Abu Bakr also moved his finger, "and at that time we were boys." Abu Bakr said: I said to Yunus: How old was al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) when Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred? He said: Fourteen years. Al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) was born when two years of the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) remained.
(c) It is reported from Ibn Mas'ud and Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), and then from Mujahid and Sa'id bin Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on them), what indicates that they disliked sleeping in the mosque; it seems that they preferred that whoever has a dwelling should not go to the mosque for the purpose of sleeping in it.
